5.0 out of 5 stars The Biggest Little Cookbook in the World Oct 19 2009
By Lou Allin TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Perfect Paperback
For all those who find preparing meals a chore, here's a little cookbook with a big attitude. Martha Cheves finds "joy while playing in the kitchen." Every time she emerges with a brimming pan or pot, she brings another gem to save time and money while pleasing the palate. Her down-home southern commentary reads like a personal diary and gives a special touch to each delicious dish. In this compact book loaded with fail-safe recipes, Martha starts with a winner: Banana Puddin'. This wonderful dessert vanishes faster than spring snow and always leaves guests cleaning their plates. Artichoke Chicken, Meatloaf Muffins, Rabbit Food Sandwich, and Pina Colada Salad. The turn of every page leads to more fun, imagination and taste that won't quit. Especially helpful are the clever tips at the end of each offering. Who could have thought that sour cream works magic in scrambled eggs or that leftover pickle juice could make cucumbers sparkle? As the final page turns, there's only one request for Martha, "More, please?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Recipes and a Personal Touch May 27 2009
By Debra Purdy Kong TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Perfect Paperback
When it comes to creating recipes, I have little imagination so I turn to cookbooks for ideas. My problem with many of them, though, is that the recipes are either too complicated or the ingredients too hard to find. So it was with great pleasure that I discovered Stir, Laugh, Repeat by Martha A. Cheves. Her straightforward recipes reflect her southern U.S. background and use simple, affordable ingredients. Cheves provides a number of money-saving tips which is greatly appreciated.

If you love cheese and white chocolate (not together) you'll love this book because the author's a fan of both and features these items in several recipes. As a bonus, Cheves also offers personal stories and a practical tip with each recipe, which gives the book a personal touch.

My only quibble is that it'll be hard to keep the book open when I try some of the recipes, which is why I usually prefer coil bound cookbooks. Also, there are a couple of ingredients such as Parker House rolls that aren't available here in Canada so I'll have to find a substitute. Meanwhile, I really need to start on that banana pudding recipe!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cookbook for Everyday Mar 7 2009
Format:Perfect Paperback
Stir, Laugh, Repeat by Martha A. Cheves is an old-fashioned cookbook, full of recipes like your mother used to make; the recipes are practical, easy and made with everyday ingredients. This is not a book filled with overly fancy, posh recipes that will break the budget; this Martha writes for the ordinary, everyday cook.
The book has a simple layout, easy to understand instructions and is filled with appetizing recipes; the author's culinary art is a lovely hodgepodge of sweets, dinners, veggie dishes and tasty nibbles. You get a range of yummy dessert delights from Banana Pudding to Key Lime Pie and mouth-watering main meals such as Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage or Baked Spaghetti. And peppered throughout the book are assorted savouries such as Creamy Potato Salad, Meatloaf Muffins, Sticky Biscuits, and Monkey Bread.
Each recipe comes accompanied with a helpful and engaging explanation, with comments and background any cook can appreciate, and some come with useful tips and variations. They are not excessively time consuming, and easily lend themselves to adaptation (a beneficial thing when you have dietary restrictions as I do).
Stir, Laugh, Repeat is an excellent cookbook, for beginner cooks to the more experienced, and one I recommend.
