Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

"The percentage of women under forty-five who knit or crochet has doubled since 1996," says Stoller (The BUST Guide to the New Girl Order), co-founder of the Stitch 'n Bitch circle in New York, and this slightly offensive, sassy guide-which could easily have been subtitled 'The Bad Girls' Guide to Knitting'-will undoubtedly appeal to this new generation of knitters. Starting with the basics, Stoller explains how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, all the steps needed to make a simple Ribbed-for-Her-Pleasure Scarf or a pair of Pippi Kneestockings. Easy-to-decipher diagrams and droll section headings ("Knit Happens," "Oops, I Knit It Again") ease readers through these first steps and will give most the confidence to tackle larger projects-like Cricket's Technicolor Cozy or Meema's Felted Marsupial Tote-designed by Stitch 'n Bitchers in Stoller's group and other knitters she admires. What makes this guide exceptional, however, is its chapter on the "Wonderful World of Knitters," which details how to start your own Stitch 'n Bitch circle and plug into the virtual knitting communities on the Web. Informative, colorful and full of attitude, this book is the perfect primer for 20- and 30-somethings looking to take on this hip "new" hobby.

From Booklist

This sassy-looking book offers a little bit of everything. Yes, practical matters are addressed, e.g., learning the stitches, "tools of the trade," and types of yarns, and, yes, there is information that's difficult to find in other places, such as advice about how to start your own knitting group or find free knitting programs online. But it is Stoller's commentary about knitting, its history, and why young women are knitting again that gets the book off to a rip-roaring start. Complementing the narrative sections are vintage pictures, family photos, and funky illustrations. The projects have a hip sensibility (bags, sweaters, a poncho), as do the chapter headings: "Oops, I Knit It Again" for the section on fixing knitting mistakes. A color inset shows the projects off; the illustrations with the instructions are black-and-white versions of the same photos. There's plenty here for beginners and skilled veterans alike. 3.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for the Beginner!, May 18 2004
By
Knit Chick "knitchick66" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stitch 'n Bitch (Paperback)
I had a friend show me the basic knit and purl stitches about a year ago -- she even cast on the stitches for me! So I consider this book to be my tutor on all things knitting. I picked it up in a bookstore about three months ago and started my first project, the beautiful baby blanket pattern. Since then, I have turned knitting into an enterprise -- I'm starting to sell some of my projects, I've started a knitting group at my neighborhood coffee shop, and everyone I know is getting handmade gifts that I'm knitting!

My assessment of this book is that it is ideal for the beginner. The book very clearly takes you through all the stitches and techniques step by step, with helpful illustrations, and it also provides lots of resources for yarn, patterns and supplies. And, beyond beginning, it makes a good reference when you're working on other projects. If you're an experienced knitter, it's probably not the book for you, because many of the patterns ARE basic (as noted by the reader from CA below who didn't like the scarf patterns). But I will tell you, my sister-in-law simply ADORES her baby blanket that I lovingly made from this book as my first project! It looks like the heirloom I intended it to be!

I now consider myself a fairly experienced knitter, and I owe it mostly to this book. I will offer a word of caution, though...I'm currently working on one of the more complex patterns, the "Little Black Top," and I'm finding that the instructions could be more explicit. Especially since this book seems to be aimed at newer knitters, too much is left to the knitter's intuition (like which decrease stitch you should use, etc.). But overall, I'd say it's a really good resource for new knitters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Highly overrated, May 7 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Stitch 'n Bitch (Paperback)
(...)there are way cooler patterns available for free on the internet (try the European yarn company sites for a start). The book has patterns for -- now hold your breath -- a garter stitch scarf! And a garter stitch scarf with eyelash yarn!! A simple ribbed scarf! A ribbed hat! And, well worth the price of the book -- wrist warmers! Ok, this is all sarcastic, but seriously, the vast majority of sweaters in the book are just the bread & butter basics, made over in newer yarns or colors. I don't think you need this book to tell you that yarns have come a long way in the past few years. Perhaps they look hip because of the anorexic models set in gritty urban scenes. (...) A good bit of text is taken over by the pattern authors telling you cutesy stories about themselves, and how hip they are. Most of the pattern designers have been knitting for three years or less. Do you really want a purse pattern written by someone who made it while trying to made a hat instead?

As a basic instruction book: It's OK, and a few sections are even good, but it is also pretty limited in its scope. There are better books out there. (...)As a read: The author's "wicked" humor, as frequently referred to, means sexual innuendo. I guess if you need to get your excitement out of a knitting book, by all means purchase this book. Also, if you need constant affirmation that it's hip to be a knit chick, this is also the book for you. I found the constant "I'm now a knitter, therefore it's cool" and "knitting is not for grannies anymore" attitude to be both sexist and ageist.

i recommend this book to any newbie learning to knit, or knitter needing a laugh and some truly hip patterns that are REALLY wearable/useable!!

I can't wait til Ms. Stoller's next book comes out!
