5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful whisky glass! July 1 2014

I was skeptical about whether or not these glasses would actually make a difference when tasting whisky. However, since they are a beautiful design, I decided I would get a pair regardless. When I finally got a chance to use them, I was absolutely pleasantly surprised! The aromas of the whisky are greatly improved with the design of these glasses, definitely causing a funneling effect as the whisky is swirled and the aromas allowed to concentrate as they rise through the narrowed opening. I really did not expect the effect to be as noticeable as it was. I am not sure if this improved nosing allows greater tasting notes to come though at the same time, however the improved aromas definitely add to the experience. Coupled with the fact that these glasses are beautifully designed and hold just the right amount of spirit, I would highly recommend these!

p.s. they would work equally well for wine aficionados as well, or really any drink you wish to experience more fully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enhance your enjoyment of single malt whisky. Jan. 5 2011
By Katawampas - Published on Amazon.com

I love single malt whisky & US bourbon. I was somewhat skeptical that this glass would greatly improve my enjoyment but I'm now a believer! The glass truly does allow you to pick out the subtle nuances more precisely. If you're spending $50 and more on single malt scotch, why would you want to miss out on the nuances of each?

The design of this glass is based on the traditional "nosing" glass used by master whisky blenders. The pinched waist holds the aroma and the tapering neck directs the bouquet up to your nose. The smaller opening keeps the air in the room from confusing your senses so you get a more precise "nose". A traditional nosing glass has no cuts in the glass or other decoration because it would distort the color of the whisky.

The Glencairn glass was originally designed for pub/bar use so it is a sturdy little glass. The bottom is heavy so it's not easily tipped over and is easily grasped. It feels good in the hand. The only glass that would provide a better hand feel (in my opinion) would be a small brandy snifter. A sherry copita would also be a good substitute glass.

The size of the bowl was designed to hold the "proper" amount of scotch which is between 35 & 50 mL or approximately 1.5 fluid oz. in a US bar. You pour the scotch to the area on the glass where it just starts to taper up. The photo on the box shows a "proper" pour. The opening is a comfortable size for nosing and drinking.

Glencairn also sells a crystal version of this glass but I prefer this lead free version because it is sturdy. The lead free version can go through the dishwasher if you choose but I always hand wash mine so that I don't get any soap or rinse agent residue in the glass. I find this glass to be the right combination of sturdy and elegance. And they make that lovely "ting" sound when bumped against another glass - "Slainte"!

I also use this glass for drinking aged rum. It has the same effect on rum as whisky; makes it even more delicious. Some rum fans feel it concentrates the aromas too much because rum is not as subtle as whisky. For young rums, I agree but for older rums, I like using this glass for sipping/tasting.

Glencairn does not manufacture these glasses in Scotland but has glass manufacturers in other countries manufacture them to their specifications. Glencairn designs, packages and distributes their glassware from East Kilbride, Scotland. There really is no glass blowing industry left in Scotland at this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for sipping and tasting Jan. 13 2012
By Franklin J. Rabon - Published on Amazon.com

So first things first, you must know what this glass is intended for. This glass isn't for drinking whiskey. It's for tasting and sipping whiskey slowly. If you want to throw back a few drinks with big slurps of deliciousness, just use a rocks glass. This glass is not conducive to drinking quickly. It's meant for you to take slow sips while taking in the full aroma of the single malt scotch or bourbon or japanese whisky or whatever your brown drink of choice is. A few other reviewers have complained about its size and that you can't just throw drinks back with this. That entirely misses the point of this glass.

Now, what this glas is intended for, it does it very well. This glass helps you truly taste your whiskey. This is for people who like and truly appreciate the way whiskey tastes. If you view bourbon as just a vehicle for getting a buzz, look elsewhere. If you view the buzz as a nice side effect of a truly magical tasting spirit, this is your glass. Until this glass, I always thought those professional whiskey tasters were making half the stuff they said up. But when I started drinking from this glass, I truly started to experience the complex flavors of truly top shelf bourbon and scotch and even the occasional japanese whiskey. I could taste the difference between the different scotch regions. It allowed me to become a connoisseur of whiskey as opposed to just a drinker of whiskey.

Basically, the biggest secret is that it channels the aromas into your nose as you are drinking. Our sense of taste is just as much from our sense of smell as it is our tastebuds. With alcohol this is even more so, because alcohol dulls your taste buds pretty quickly. Meaning most of the flavor comes from smell. The second secret is that the design essentially controls the size of your sips to optimal level. for each sip, you basically want just enough to be able to lightly move it around in your mouth. Also, it tends to put the sip right on your tongue directly, which is preferred by whiskey tasters.

It's also a really gorgeous glass that really displays the color of the drink well. It's very easy to hold in your hand as well, due to the way the bowl hits the base.

If you've dropped a lot of money into a great scotch, bourbon or some other whiskey, this really is a great glass to help you truly appreciate it. If you want to drink beam and coke or even just swill your whiskey down at record pace, look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, nice heft Dec 19 2010

A nice glass to enjoy your whiskey of choice. It looks nice on your bar and the set is perfect for enjoying something nice w/ friends.

They have a good heft and even with my friend's rough use no problems. Not fragile, but not idiot-proof either. Haven't broken one yet. The shape really does seem to help focus aroma. Found these after another Canadian whisky set w/ a large maple leaf on the bottom (chose not to get those because of the leaf).

After about 2-3 months use, i am seeing the bottom lettering be a little less distinct. Looks etched and the outside edge is the bottom contact of the glass - so i expect they will eventually wear smooth. No biggie but be aware.

Nice glasses - definitely recommend the set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stolzle Glencairn Whiskey Glass July 12 2011

The Stolzle Glencairn glass was suggested to me by a Single Malt connoisseur in Scotland. I could not find this item in my local area so I decided to purchase it through Amazon. I selected the overnight shipping option and I received my item the next day by noon. The Glencairn glass arrived in perfect condition. I love drinking my favorite Single Malt Scotch from this glass. The narrow top allows for better smelling of the whisky so you get the overall bouquet of the whisky. The wide bottom allows for more volume. And I especially like how Glencairn finishes off the glass with a thick and heavy resting base.
