Product Description

From Library Journal

Nationally syndicated columnist Carper (Food: Your Medical Miracle, HarperCollins, 1994) proposes that aging is a disease process that is correctable, preventable, and reversible. This premise, which is supported by current, nationally acclaimed biomolecular research, is based on the free-radical theory of aging. After discussing the biological mystery of aging in terms of free radicals and antioxidants, Carper formulates an "attack plan" that emphasizes the importance of vitamins, minerals, and appropriate foods. Accurate facts regarding the major vitamins and minerals are stated, with leading researchers revealing the prescribed "diet" of supplements they take daily. The effective use of subheadings enables the reader to focus quickly on pertinent facts, vitamins, etc. References are listed according to subject matter. Carper provides a wealth of informative tips for the lay reader serious about slowing down the aging process.

From Booklist

Popular nutrition writer Carper offers a quick, readable guide that focuses on stopping (and even reversing) the effects of aging on our bodies. Research suggests that aging happens after cells have been bombarded with "free radicals" for so long that they cease to function. Free radicals come in many forms (fats, pollutants, and even oxygen are included), and in a perfect world, they would be neutralized by natural antioxidants (such as vitamins E and C and garlic). However, when we neglect to feed our bodies these antioxidants, the free radicals do more damage--and hence we age. Carper, therefore, argues for an antioxidant-rich diet supplemented by megadoses of vitamins, thereby keeping our cells healthy and major diseases such as cancer and heart disease at bay. The first half of the book discusses the most important "antiaging" vitamins, and Carper details the types and doses of supplements we should take. The second half of the book recommends specific foods to eat and beverages to drink. Filled with illuminating facts about the American diet ("More than half of Americans do not eat a single serving of fruit, vegetables or fruit juice on any given day" ), Carper also shares which vitamin supplements (and how much) researchers in the field take. However, dietary needs of growing children and pregnant women are covered only superficially. The book concludes with a list of medical and scientific writings that Carper referenced in researching this book. 4.0 out of 5 stars WOW What a great way to STOP AGING!, Feb 19 2003

This review is from: Stop Aging Now!: Ultimate Plan for Staying Young and Reversing the Aging Process, The (Paperback)
Jean Carper has done a wonderful job of relating what the medical profession and researh have proven to be that elusive prescription to the fountain of youth. I quite agree with the 9th reviewer here on Amazon.com has written in her review.

I have been on such prescription for about 20 years now so I am giving testimony to Carper's prescription. Everybody on the planet earth should read and implement the directions in this book because we should learn to live up to our fullest potential and staying healthy is necessary to do that. We have lost, prematurely, many of our great brains because they abused their bodies with bad food, booze, and poor mental and physical health.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST book on diet, supplements and, Aug 24 2002
By
Los Angeles Reader "LA, CA Reader" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stop Aging Now!: Ultimate Plan for Staying Young and Reversing the Aging Process, The (Paperback)
This book is a treasure chest of extremely valuable information on how to preserve your mental capabilities and to protect yourself from disease with the right diet and the right supplements and amounts of them. Did you know that people taking vitamin C or E supplements are shown in general NOT to develop Alzheimer's? Did you know that blueberries, strawberries and spinach are brain-savers? Did you know that you can control and possibly prevent insulin resistence by eating a low "glycemic index" diet. Did you know that eating foods equalling 5500 ORACs a day will protect your memory and motor control? (A cup of black tea brewed for five minutes contains 1200 ORACs.) Did you know that vigorous walking for an hour, five days a week will lower your risk of stroke by about half (p. 331), as will fruits and veggies and tea (p. 323)?
Jean Carper discusses the importance of Omega-3 oils in fish for pregnant women who want to optimize their children's mental capacities, as well as for the rest of us. She discusses the B vitamins, folic acid and the other, and their vital importance.
She gets down to specifics with doses to take and appropriate combinations.
I heartily recommend this book. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one.
The writing is energetic and enjoyable. The glycemic index and ORAC tables contain invaluable compilations for charting an optimal daily diet. I posted copies on my refrigerator door!
I've given this book to several people, all of whom cherish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and usefull, May 31 2002
This review is from: Stop Aging Now!: Ultimate Plan for Staying Young and Reversing the Aging Process, The (Paperback)
I love this book so much. It's full of information the average person can easily put to use every day. It's written in a way that's straight-forward and easy to understand. You can just zip right through it without falling asleep. Let's face it, nobody is reading this book for the entertainment value. Jean Carper's style is right on the mark, just give the information is a simple way, never long-winded. There is something in here for everyone. Even a couch potato could read this book, basically stay a couch potato, but still get something out of this book is they follow some of the advice in here. There are no gimmicks in here, just practical information you can put to good use every day.
