Book Description

Right now, over 100 million Americans secretly feel frustrated and bored with their lives. If you've come to regard yourself as your own worst enemy; if you constantly daydream and wonder, "Is this all there is?"; if you have a tendency, when asked how you're doing, to just say "Fine," you may be one of them. If this sounds familiar, there's clearly something missing from your life. This book will help you discover what it is, and how to win it back. Written by Mel Robbins, one of America's top relationship experts, this hands-on guide not only shows you how to put your finger on the problem, it reveals what to do about it.Mel Robbins has spent her career teaching people how to push past their self-imposed limits to get what they truly desire. She has an in-depth understanding of the psychological and social factors that repeatedly hold you back, and more importantly, a unique set of tools for getting you where you want to be. In Stop Saying You're Fine, she draws on the latest neuroscientific research, interviews with countless everyday people, and ideas she's tested in her own life to show what works and what doesn't. The key, she explains, is understanding how your own brain works against you. Because evolution has biased your mental gears against taking action, what you need are techniques to outsmart yourself. That may sound impossible, but Mel has created a remarkably effective method to help you do just that-and some of her discoveries will astonish you. By ignoring how you feel and seizing small amounts of rich possibility-a process she calls "leaning in"-you can make tiny course corrections add up to huge change. Among this book's other topics: how everything can depend on not hitting the snooze button; the science of connecting with other people; what children can teach us about getting things done; and why five seconds is the maximum time you should wait before acting on a great idea.Blending warmth, humor, and unflinching honesty with up-to-the-minute science and hard-earned widom, Stop Saying You're Fine moves beyond the platitudes and easy fixes offered in many self-help books. Mel's insights will actually help vault you to a better life, ensuring that the next time someone asks how you're doing, you can truthfully answer, "Absolutely great."

2.0 out of 5 stars There Are Better Books, Aug 12 2011

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Mel Robbins repeatedly states that her readers are "stuck" and acts as though they are all in that state for the same reason. I usually like dominant personalities, but I found her irritatingly preachy. There are two much better books I'd like to recommend:

This Year I Will by M.J. Ryan doesn't really have new information about pursuing goals and changing habits, but the author did a fantastic job of putting together a large number of activities and ways of tracking progress. What works for one personality type will most definitely not motivate another, so I really appreciated the variety of strategies offered.

Debt-Free Forever by Gail Vaz-Oxlade has a lot of information about pursuing goals too. Gail is who Judge Judy might have been if she'd become a financial advisor (but Gail has a much better sense of humour). I'm not in debt, but found this book fantastic anyway because people often don't know how to overcome money hurdles to achieve their dreams. Gail is also more of a realist and lays out how much cash and time it will take to do the things you want. Thanks to the advice in this book, I am 1/3 of the way to achieving one of my financial goals.

Hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Book, April 19 2011
By Stephen Ashley "Author of Walt Disney World w... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stop Saying You're Fine: Discover a More Powerful You (Hardcover)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
From my wife Sarah: Once in a while a truly great book comes along that can change the course of your life. This book has that potential. In fact, once it's released we want to give copies to the people we care about.

I think the title doesn't quite express what this book is about. If I had to summerize the premise of this book in a short paragraph, I'd say the following:

As humans, we're biologically programmed to avoid change. Because of this, we live unfulfilled lives, missing out on so many of our hopes and dreams. This book teaches us how to trick our own brains into taking the small steps that can make huge positive changes in our lives.

It's fantastic! Even before I got 1/4 of the way through the book I started making changes in my life. I did something I've been wanting to do for years but didn't until now...

Here's some of what's great about this book:

1. It's easy reading and easy to understand. There's no struggling through as in many self-help books. It's interesting, full of useful information, and includes real life examples of people's lives.

2. It's practical. There are easy to apply steps that can really make a difference. In fact I'm finding that it's impacted so many areas of my life already. I'm just thinking differently.

3. The book hits home. I just kept recognizing myself as I read. I think most people will see themselves.

Is this the answer for everyone? I don't think there are many people on this planet who couldn't benefit from reading this book. However some people have some things going on that are much more complex than what this book covers. Regardless, it's packed full of powerful insight and great advice.

Also, from my perspective, there's the spiritual end of things that this book doesn't address. Even so, it in no way conflicts with my beliefs and in fact the techniques can be used to support my own spiritual growth.

I highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in personal growth, anyone who feels at all frustrated in life, or anyone who would just like things to be a bit different or better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time to take action!, Mar 28 2011
By A. Rolle "Book Junkie" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stop Saying You're Fine: Discover a More Powerful You (Hardcover)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
Stop saying you're Fine is a light-hearted,self-help book that will give you the tools to achieve your aspirations and goals. Mel Robbins takes you by the shoulders and shakes you so that you want to "Wake-Up",stop talking, and take action in every aspect of your life. I found the book very helpful and insightful because things I had been doing in my life, I didn't realize they were destructive to my mental well-being and my own sucess. The author gave great advice about making your goals public and I like the advice of making your goals public because this information has already helped me in my professional life, so that I won't continue to sabatoge myself by making the same mistakes. You will find yourself immediately inspired to become the person you really want to be. You can apply the advice to just about anything and get the desired affect you want.

Break the cycle of counterproductive behavior that has not help you so far and do something with yourself is the general tone of the book. Robbins' advice will allow you to step back and look at what you have been doing wrong so that you can then make the necessary adjustments and become a better you. This book is easy to follow with good examples and anecdotes that will make it very enjoyable and inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to recognize that the risk of moving toward your dreams is much lower than the slow, everyday punishment you inflict on, Mar 24 2011
By A. Pinaud - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stop Saying You're Fine: Discover a More Powerful You (Hardcover)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
One of the most interesting things in this book, is how Mel Robbins get you to admit that in at least one of the seven areas that she defined: Family, Love and Sex, Spirituality, Career/Purpose, Friends/Community, Body/Health & Money you are not fine as you may try to convince yourself you are.

The book is divided in 3 parts, Part 1: Why you aren't getting what you want, Part 2: The Method for Becoming Powerful and Getting What you want and Part 3: Finding the Stamina to keep Getting what you want.

The first Part goes into explaining why you are `Stuck' the second part is how to make a plan or `Map' and the last one in how to continue after you leave the book.

One of my favorite quotes of the book: "You need to recognize that the risk of moving toward your dreams is much lower than the slow, everyday punishment you inflict on yourself by suppressing your dream"

This book can get you to recognize that not all may be fine, and can give you a boost to beat resistance. The book also said: "Resistance is about never living the moment" and it's so true. We all deal with resistance, and we all stop living in the moment.

So read the book and live on the moment, and like any of this kind of book, to be useful Mel Robbins remind you that: "Do Nothing may fell Easy, but it Makes you Unhappy"
