Book Description

May 22 2012 Storey's Guide to Raising

Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry is the only book you need to naturally and humanely raise a wide range of poultry, from chickens and turkeys to waterfowl and game birds -- even uncommon species, such as pigeons, emus, doves, ostriches, peafowl, and swans. Whether you’re running a farm or raising a few birds in the backyard, Glenn Drowns tells you everything you need to know about breed selection, housing, space requirements, behavior, breeding, hatching, feeding, health care, and the business of processing meat and eggs. This revised edition includes new and updated information on health and disease, raising birds on pasture, growing your own feed, housing, breeding, slaughtering, and marketing.

While I was at an internship, I read the entire 3rd edition of this book and loved it! Everything was there! But this is the 4th edition, and for some reason, they transformed the book into something that looks more like a review of home-scale poultry production than a how-to guide. They took out everything, from floor requirements, feeder and waterer spaces, brooding instructions... The 3rd edition even had plans to make your own feed troughs! It was the best!

What I suggest to any who would like to buy the book is to buy Storey's guide to Chicken production first, then this one that complements more than anything the chicken guide. ONLY BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE LOOKING INTO EXOTIC POULTRY BREEDS, NOT CHICKENS.

Have a nice day and hope this was useful :) ;)

Perfect level of information depth to springboard my poultry adventure! I have not raised poultry in over 20 years, so I wanted to refresh my memory. This book went far beyond that for me. I learned things that I never knew--but wish I had--and even found answers to questions from way back when! This is a must-read for anyone wanting to get into poultry.
