Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea--the sixth album from the most incendiary female British performer to emerge in the 1990s--is as powerful a record as any Polly Jean Harvey has made. Il a fallu plus d'un an passé à New York pour que PJ Harvey ressource son songwriting au feu des lumières de la ville, brisant par la même occasion la routine d'une vie partagée entre la route et sa ferme du Dorset. Ce qui d'emblée frappe, c'est la voix qui a gagné en maturité ce que la musique est loin d'avoir perdu en énergie. Car PJ reste fidèle à l'électricité du rock et "A Place Called Home", pour ne citer que ce titre, rappelle l'époque de Dry. Harvey a travaillé le chant et si la colère continue de bouillonner, c'est intériorisée et contenue qu'elle trouve ici à s'exprimer au travers de chansons produites avec le fidèle Rob Ellis et Mick Harvey, ex-Bad Seeds, comme en compagnie de Thom Yorke de Radiohead sur le sublime "This Mess We're In".
