An excellent sequel to the 1939 film "The Wizard of OZ", Dec 3 2007
At first, I have never even heard of this film; nor that this film is sequel to the 1939 live action film "The Wizard of OZ"; that is 'til I've bought it on DVD, and I after watched it, I found an excellent sequel film; though I was shocked and surprised by the negative reviews I would see on the web.
I love the talents of Paul Lynde (who had also played Uncle Arthur from TV's live-action comedy "Bewitched") and Liza Minnelli, who provided the voice of Dorothy, reprising the role originally played by her mother Judy Garland, and she DOES sound a lot like her mother, when said "You wicked old witch!" (I love Judy; I have a few of her films).

Bad plot, good voices, Feb 20 2004
By A Customer
Since I love the Wizard of Oz, I wanted to see everything and anything that had to do with it. Today I got my copy of "Return to Oz" and watched it.
First of all, there are several serious plot holes. At the end of the 1939 movie, Dorothy declares, "...And I'm not going to leave here [Kansas] ever, ever again!" But at the beginning of this 1974 animated sequel, she talks about how she wants to go back to Oz.
Another big problem was the fact that the Tin Man and Lion were not at all willing to help their friend the Scarecrow when he was in trouble, and ran away when they heard of the danger. For pity's sake, if they could face the Wicked Witch of the West, how come not Mombi? I found that to be very disappointing and out of character.
Most of the songs, and a bit of the dialouge, is corny at best. There are a couple of songs, however, which are worth listening to. I'm not sure of their exact names, but it's the first and the last songs. Both were sung by Liza Minelli.
The voice talent was the best part. I particularly enjoyed Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of Auntie Em. (Margaret Hamilton in real life was a lot like an Auntie Em.) Unfortunately, she had only one scene. I was amazed that it was the same lady who did the Wicked Witch of the West. If I hadn't seen the credits, I wouldn't have guessed.
Liza Minelli was exceptional. She sounds so much like her mother. If I hadn't heard Judy Garland sing so much I probably would not have been able to tell the difference. Paul Ford, Milton Berle, and Mickey Rooney also gave good performances.
The one voice I thought wasn't as good was that of Ethel Merman as Mombi. Okay, maybe I was spoiled by the orginal movie, but she just wasn't that scary. Her witch laugh (if it was real at all) was weak and not at all frightening. Although, like I said, Margaret Hamilton makes an excellent Aunt Em, she also made the perfect witch in the original movie. And her wild cackle was petrifying. So just don't expect too much from Mombi.
All in all, if you're
(A) A die-hard Oz fan
(B) A die-hard fan of one of the cast members
You'll like this.
