Product Description

Jean Chr?tien won the hearts of Canadians with his unabashed love of his country, his unwavering commitment to federalism, and his abiding faith in the people.

In this reissue of his remarkable best-selling memoir, Chr?tien recalls in colourful and fascinating detail his beginnings as a populist lawyer from Shawinigan, his rise as an MP and cabinet minister, and, ultimately, his election as Prime Minister of Canada.

Straight from the Heart is an entertaining, insightful first-person account of Chr?tien`s early days organizing for the Liberals in rural Quebec, how a young French-speaking MP learned the ropes in an English-dominated capital, his pride at becoming Canada?s first French-Canadian Prime Minister of Finance, and the dramatic battles he fought side by side with Pierre Trudeau to win the 1980 Quebec referendum and patriate the Constitution with the Charter of Rights. It includes behind-the-scenes descriptions of his two leadership bids and the election campaign that led to a majority Liberal government in 1993.

This classic memoir is essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of one of the most successful, skillful, and popular political leaders of our times.

Praise for Straight from the Heart:

?Highly recommendable? What Chr?tien?s autobiography offers is a vision of one man?s considerable passion. Its sight line is clear, textured, and indisputably colourful.? ? Maclean?s

?Exuberant, slangy, light-hearted optimistic, and decent-minded.?? Winnipeg Free Press

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy to read, April 21 2004

Wether you love him or hate him, Jean Chretien is a remarkable man. For someone who is not very familiar with Canadian history, this book was very informative. I love all the funny quotes Mr. Chretien has ever said. This book covers not only the political but also the personal moments in our former PM's life. What I particularly enjoyed is that it is not a self-glorifying book and it talk not only about the political successes but also the difficulties and the failure. And it was not boring at all!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Jean Chretien, Jan 15 2004

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Whether you like him or not, Chretien was one of Canada's longest serving Prime Ministers, and here, supposedly in his own words, is the story of his political career. It began forty years ago, when in his late twenties and with almost no compitency in the English language, he joined the Trudeau government. By the early 80s, he was playing a key role in the patriation of the Canadian constitution, and in 1993 he reached the zenith of his career as Prime Minister. (The latter being beyond the scope of his book.)

As Prime Minister he has succeeded in keeping Canada a stable and prosperous country, as well as maintaining a certain degree of independence in terms of foreign policy from the U.S. He may not have left as great a legacy as his mentor Trudeau, but his moderate, steady, and sometimes bemusing leadership has done much for Canada.

But now that Martin has ousted him in what is nothing short of a coup, things are changing--at the helm is a Neocon in Liberal clothing, and the future looks bleak indeed.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Example of Political Hypocrisy, April 2 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Straight From the Heart (Paperback)
Chretien's ghost-written autobiography is brimming with phony Canadian patriotism and dull-witted "straight from the hip" comments that have gained the prime minister notoriety among his fellow Canadians. Almost every single principle that Chretien professes faith in between the covers of this tome has been contradicted by his first four years as PM; from senate reform to patronage. This book reads like and is about as believable as a Liberal Party campaign pamphlet and should be filed along with the Liberal red book campaign platform under "U" or "P" for Unkept Promises. If Canadians wish to read an autobiography that gives real insight to a Canadian politician's motivations and beliefs, check out Preston Manning's "New Canada".
