5.0 out of 5 stars Holistic Medicine: Put your money where your mouth is or should be! April 19 2012
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Kent Lawson, DDS, MS, Orthodontist opens the field of dental and orthodontic medicine to close examination and comes up wiht a book that belongs n the hands of all parent who are raising children who seem as though they will require some correction of their biting mechanism. The Lauson system he introduces re-examines the way we look at the structures of the mouth - not only the teeth but also the gingiva, the palate, the TMJ, and the sinus passages. Instead of the usual and expected approach to creating a beautiful smile while correcting appropriate approximation of the upper jaw with the lower jaw to prevent future problems with dental wear and aging - that usual approach being tooth extractions, mandibular surgery, braces, TMJ surgery - Dr. Lauson realigns the oral cavity with simple devices that encourage the body to reshape the upper and lower jaws in a more natural, non surgical way.

Dr. Lauson states ' Crowded teeth are almost always the result of narrow jaw structures, not teeth that are too big. Larger teeth are actually an advantage when it comes to creating a full beautiful smile.' He also maintains 'My sincere hope is that parents of children with a bad bite, crooked teeth or underdeveloped jaw will look beyond braces because they know what to do with their children's teeth and know how to speak to their dentist about the best treatment.' What the book then proceeds to do is offer many anatomical drawings to illustrate Lauson's postulates, and then many many photographs of patients whose mouths he has corrected without surgery.

The writing is in language for the lay person and yet it is also a book that just may find its way into the hands of dental students. His Nine Keys to Lower Facial Harmony should be understood by everyone who faces dental alterations. Grady Harp, April 12

5.0 out of 5 stars A Revolutionary New Approach To A Beautiful Smile July 2 2012
By John J. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There's an old saying that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

And there's probably no better way to make a great first impression than with a healthy, attractive smile. Surveys conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry show that a full 94% of those polled say they are more likely to notice a person's smile over any other physical attribute. Meanwhile, the same surveys indicate that only 50% of those questioned are truly happy with their smile. Most often this is because of crooked teeth, overbites and other orthodontic maladies.

Unfortunately, for most of the last century, dentists have been trained that the only way to correct problems like these is with unnecessary tooth extractions and painful surgery. But now there is new hope. Dr. Kent Lauson (DDS) has written a revolutionary, holistic and, in many ways, miraculous book, "Straight Talk About Crooked Teeth," in which he offers alternative, easy-to-understand treatments and solutions to get you that "movie star smile" you've been dreaming about all your life.

Dr. Lauson takes the reader step-by-step, using photos and diagrams from case studies, through the limitations of traditional orthodontics. In simple terminology, he explains the truth about why people develop problems with their pearly whites. And Dr. Lauson then spells out "The Lauson System: Nine Keys To Lower Facial Harmony," the result of 25 years of research, which he believes "takes dental beauty and facial function to a whole new level and may set the standard for orthodontics in the 21st Century."

Dr. Lauson says he wrote the book because he was "tired of seeing traditional orthodontic methods cause harm to patients because of ignorance of orthodontic methods still taught in university orthodontic programs."
He says he wants parents of children with things like a bad bite, crooked teeth or underdeveloped jaw to truly understand the exact cause of the problem so they can be on a level playing field when they talk to their dentist about the best treatment. Dr. Lauson says he also recognized the need to spread this revolutionary new information to a much larger audience than he could possibly reach through his lectures and travels around the world.

"Straight Talk About Crooked Teeth" goes far beyond helping to achieve sensational smiles. "The Lauson System" has helped patients rid themselves of problems like asthma, ADHD, TMJ and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. And this book is packed with stories and photos of people who have lived for years with these aggravating conditions and whose lives have been dramatically changed for the better.

Dr. Lauson's explains that crowded teeth are the result of narrow jaw structures, and not teeth that are too big. In fact, he contends that larger teeth are actually an advantage in creating a gorgeous smile. And he shows, again using photos of patients and their mouths, how the underdevelopment of the upper jaw can be easily corrected using "The Lauson System." Throughout the book, Dr. Lauson gently reminds readers of one of his favorite truisms, "Teeth dominate, muscles and joints accommodate."

Dr. Lauson also is not afraid in this book to criticize many of the larger medical corporations, motivated by profit and competition, which push orthodontists to purchase their specific braces, wires and other devices to move teeth. Dr. Lauson advocates alternative treatment appliances "typically made in small, local orthodontic labs." Indeed, this book features a large appendix detailing these unobtrusive and painless implements and devices.

And Dr. Lauson is quick to point out that his system of tooth and jaw correction is not limited to children. In fact, he offers countless case studies of people whose lives have been changed by "The Lauson System" even after they've reached what he likes to call their "Golden Years."

There are many more groundbreaking ideas outlined in "Straight Talk About Crooked Teeth," along with a whole chapter of recommendations from other dental experts. But perhaps most refreshing is the conversational, clear and concise language that Dr. Lauson uses to take the "mystery" out of dentistry and make it understandable to everyone.

This book should be required reading for parents of children or adults who want a "winning smile" along with the overall improved health that "The Lauson System" can bring them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every parent should read this prior to getting orthodontic work done! May 10 2012
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Straight Talk About Crooked Teeth-The New Orthodontics by
S. Kent Lauson DDS, MS Orthodontist is a wonderful book which
explains viable alternatives to complex dental surgical procedures which
can be both costly and painful. The traditional orthodontic approaches
in the United States are the employment of braces with much less
emphasis on removable treatment appliances used predominantly in
Europe.

Viable alternatives to the traditional approaches include Functional
Facial Orthopedics (FF0) which involve the application of gentle
pressures to reshape facial structures or to reposition them
to improve the health or overall appearance of the individual.
FFO corects bone structures that are narrow or underdeveloped
by expanding or enlarging them to harmonize the rest of the face.

The second type of correction is to reposition bone structures
by moving the lower jaw forward. While the upper jaw is being
expanded, the lower jaw can come forward on its own as it is
no longer trapped behind the upper teeth. The need for the
extraction of permanent teeth is virtually eliminated in FFO.
In addition, a deviated septum may be corrected by expanding
the upper jaw. A two-way saggital appliance , like a Schwarz device,
widens the upper jaw and creates added bone structure.

Bad habits can create destructive pressure and engineering
shear on the teeth and supporting structures. Examples of
bad habits are nail biting, chewing on erasers, pushing the
tongue against the front or back teeth and tearing food
instead of using a fork and knife to cut it into smaller pieces.

Megatrends in orthdontics include Invisalign, the Cone Beam
X-ray Machine to view facial structures in 3D and Temporary
Anchorage Devices (TAD) to move teeth. There is an extensive
Appendix and Glossary to amplify important technical terms and
jargon in the art of Orthodontics. The presentation is readable
and aimed at readers who have little or no knowledge of Orthodontics.
