Book Description

September 2003
"It was once my good fortune to assist in a discovery of some importance to lovers of literature, and to searchers after the new and wonderful. As nearly a quarter of a century as since elapsed, and as two others shared in the discovery, it may seem to the reader strange that the general public has been kept in ignorance of an event apparently so full of interest. Yet this silence is quite explicable; for of the three participants none has heretofore written for publication; and of my two associates, one is a quiet, retiring man, the other is erratic and forgetful. 4.0 out of 5 stars Charles Dake continues Edgar Allan Poe's story Feb 2 2012

A bit of background is necessary to appreciate and enjoy this story. Edgar Allan Poe is best known for his macabre poetry and stories. Lesser known is his novel "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", similar to Verne's scifi-travelogs. Poe tells the story in the third person, a sailor's story of traveling to the South Pole and the strange things they find there (note at this time -1838- no one had yet traveled there, although some explorers had seen the Antarctic coast). Critiques of this work by other authors and reviewers were very mixed. The negative ones focused on certain incomplete story threads and conflicting events. Then as now, people mistook a fictional account for fact. Charles Romyn Dake sought to come to Poe's assistance, and possibly take advantage, the publicity and controversy by writing "A Strange Discovery". This story reads quite smoothly, continuing the narrative where Poe's ends. It does tie up the loose ends very conveniently, weaving more actual facts into the story. Perhaps he was trying to 'one up' Poe? Exploring Poe's, Dake's, and other authors of the time interactions and lives make a mystery almost more interesting than their fictional stories.
