I attended the Strange Fire conference - where they gave this book away (which is why it's not in my purchases).

The book covers much of what was said at the conference - although I'd encourage you to watch the videos online. Of particular importance were the lectures by Steve Lawson, Conrad Mbewe, Tom Pennington.

In a nutshell, the charismatic movement has sunk to the point where anything and everything is attributed to the Holy Spirit. This is nothing short of heresy. Scripture plainly explains who the Holy Spirit is and what He does - and when this is compared to current charismatic practices, the contrast is obvious and striking.

The book lays down the theological reasons for this. It does so in an articulate, authoritative and readable fashion.

Is the book divisive? Absolutely! The truth always divides. Scripture was meant to do so - it is "profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction."

I unreservedly recommend this book to anyone looking to have the light of Biblical truth shed on the charismatic movement.

Excellent. I really enjoy all of John MacArthur's works. This book is a very thorough analysis of elements of the charismatic movement where the Holy Spirit is being worshiped to the exclusion of Jesus and God the Father (since the Spirits ministry is to convict and focus on Christ so that we become more and more like our Savior, Jesus). He does a very good job of supporting his viewpoint with scripture and really explains why "the canon is closed" and where "speaking in tongues" in today's gibberish (as opposed to actual foreign languages as occurred at Pentecost) is not a spiritual gift anymore. He also highlights doctrinal compromise by this movement, such as their "joining in brotherhood" with the Roman Catholic church which most born again Christians should question (since Roman Catholicism is a system of works at its core and not of faith alone).Highly recommended for those who have questions about the charismatic movement, speaking in tongues, etc..

If you've ever had doubts about the Charismatic church and that nagging feeling that something is just not right. This will clear up all those issues with the proper study of the scriptures and essential theology. Sola Scriptura!

I believe these deceptions come as a result of separating the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, and the Word of God.

Too many young people want the Spirit but are not into the Word of God enough, if at all, to know that the Holy Spirit and the Word of God cannot be separated. They always work together. The Holy Spirit magnifies Jesus Christ and does not take the glory away from Jesus. Discernment comes through knowing the Word of God and searching it to find the truth. We are to test the spirits... the Bible tells us this because there will be many false spirits in the last days.

The spirit that many young people and some older ones believe is a so called holy Spirit that does not honor Christ Jesus nor magnify His name. This other spirit also mocks the Holy Spirit and too many young people are falling under its influence. I hope everyone will read this book and speak to their teens and young adults regarding comparing what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit, how the Holy Spirit never takes the glory away from Christ Jesus, and never works separately from the Word of God. Teaching your young ones discernment comes from being a good Berean and examining Scripture carefully to see if something contradicts it, or if something has been added or taken away from it. Without discernment, many will fall for these delusions.

While the author is a little strong against all Charismatics, he does a good job identifying weaknesses with Charismatic practices.
