This review is from: Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier Waltz Suite No. 2 & Brahms: Symphony No. 2 op. 73 in D major (DVD)
THis DVD is a mislabeled small treasure box. The treasure is a good performance of "Burleske," the 20-minute piano concerto by the young Richard Strauss, with talented young German pianist Bernd Glemser at the keyboard. The title piece, "Rosenkavalier Waltz Suite #2" turns out to be 8 minutes long, and not consequential. The second title piece, the second symphony of Brahms, isn't there at all, except for a hidden run through part of the first movement, cut off abruptly. To find it you have to run off the end of "Burleske" and there it is. There is a bonus available from the main screen, an "Extra" of an audio-only 48-mnute version of the Brahms Double Concerto (violin and cello) played by competent but unknown performers. The screen shows a pleasant forest scene during the Dounle Concerto. I give the DVD 3 stars because of the good performance of "Burleske" which I have not found anywhere else on DVD. Then, too, Bernd Glemser is a young star with wonderful hands, and deserves to be seen on video in such a showpiece work.
