I have been using versions of this program for 9 years on laptops. You hook up an external GPS sensor and have real time navigation. I still prefer it over units mounted to windshields with suction cups because the screen is bigger. This program desperately needs to be upgraded to use the on board GPS sensors that most tablets have now to remain relevant.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good alternative to GPS or Google Map March 16 2013
By Alan Rivière (Big Al) TOP 50 REVIEWER
This Microsoft Streets and Trips 2013 comes in one DVD disk. It covers Canada, the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Mexico. Installation is simple and quick. Activation online or by phone is required. Using the software is simple - just type the address of interest into the search box, or use the mouse to point and click on the default map to get to the desired location. Use the route planner to plan a route from start to finish. A couple of features may interest the techies - uploading map information as a text message to a mobile device and linking the software to GPS. For uploading map info, one must have Microsoft Outlook installed and mobile service with data access. For GPS linkup, one must have a GPS device connected to the computer. Since I don't have the necessary setups, I have to leave these features to other reviewers. As I browsed through the maps, I have noticed inaccuracies or omissions, mostly in the rural or remote areas. Nevertheless, this Streets and Trips 2013 is a good alternative to GPS, which can be expensive, or Google Maps, which can be a pain to use due to net congestion.

3.0 out of 5 stars MS Map technology needs major overhall March 6 2013

Major highways and most city and town displays are excellent. Would like to see more up-dated service centres on the Trans-Canada highway system, i.e., Ontario to the east coast. That being said, MS needs to catch up with mapping technology that is readily available. The minor rural roads such as in Nova Scotia for example, are simply lacking, amateurish and just plain mickey mouse. Google beats MS S&T every time. Very disappointed in the 2013 release.
