Book Description

Aug. 23 2010 0521516641 978-0521516648 1
Lavishly illustrated in color, this textbook takes an applied approach to introduce undergraduate students to the basic principles of structural geology. The book provides unique links to industry applications in the upper crust, including petroleum and groundwater geology, which highlight the importance of structural geology in exploration and exploitation of petroleum and water resources. Topics range from faults and fractures forming near the surface to shear zones and folds of the deep crust. Students are engaged through examples and parallels drawn from practical everyday situations, enabling them to connect theory with practice. Containing numerous end-of-chapter problems, e-learning modules, and with stunning field photos and illustrations, this book provides the ultimate learning experience for all students of structural geology.

Review

"... the structural geology text that I have long been waiting for ... this text truly shows the application of structural geology to real life academic and industry problems. It will go straight onto my syllabus as the required text." Professor Bruce Trudgill, Colorado School of Mines

"Evaluate it? ... I've already put a change order into our bookstore to change to it for my Structure class next Fall! It's awesome." Prof. Terry Naumann, University of Alaska

"If you only buy one structural geology textbook--this is the one to get. It's both theoretical and practical ... with excellent illustrations and thought-provoking examples." Professor Rob Butler, University of Aberdeen

"Gorgeous. Nothing less. Everyone in need of structural geology--and that's quite a few of us--will certainly find this book very useful. There is a good balance between text and figures, and the figures are very good, be it the photos, maps, graphics or principle sketches. It is simply a pleasure to read this book. Seldom have we seen such a user-friendly textbook." - GEO

"In addition to being a great textbook option for undergraduates, this book will serve as an excellent refresher for professional geologists. Fossen's extensive use of citations throughout the text, in figure captions, and at the end of each chapter provides an excellent window into many of the most important papers in the primary literature of both modern and classical structural geology. Readers will also find Fossen's references to free and commercial structural geology software and other resources helpful.

In addition to the modern approach to structural geology and tectonics that the book reflects, it has several other important strengths. First, it deliberately balances painstakingly accurate detail with 'big picture' ideas and broad thinking. Students and instructors who use this book will also benefit from the balance it provides among observational, theoretical, and numerical and analogue modeling perspectives. Second, the book nicely balances the traditional academic approach to structural geology with important industry applications (e.g., chapter 19, Salt Tectonics; chapter 8, Faults; and many additional interpreted seismic sections) that tend to receive only cursory treatment in other structural geology textbooks. A third strength is its clear and rigorous yet accessible physics and math coverage of strain and stress theory (e.g., chapters 2-6 and Appendix A); the strain analysis spreadsheets and other ancillary material such as textbook figures, problem sets, and field photographs available on the textbook Web site (http:// www .cambridge.org/features/fossen/) should also prove to be great learning and problem-solving tools.

In summary, this is an excellent, accessible introductory structural geology text that is admirably well illustrated and well written. It should prove to be a valuable resource for students and instructors alike." EOS

"Once in a while, an extraordinarily superior book appears in the midst of other good books on a subject. Without a doubt, this is ht case with this introductory structural geology work by Fossen. Most outstanding, the book provides a balance between soft rock and hard rock, discusses the field's relevance to basic and applied applications, and includes unparalleled illustrations and photos that are critical for instruction and understanding ... It is the most student- and instructor-friendly work this reviewer has seen. Essential." CHOICE

"The illustrations are plentiful and outstanding in multiple colors. Very seldom can one buy a book of this quality..." Richard Jackson, Environmental and Engineering Geoscience

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Quality Jan. 11 2012
Format:Hardcover
This textbook fell apart right when I opened it. It pretty much explodes because the glue they use is so cheap. Tons of errors, doesn't go into a lot of detail...needs a large revision!!! Liked the diagrams and photos and online material.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor binding Oct. 19 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
While this books is adequate in its coverage of structural geology, by the time I reached chapter 4 I too had sections of the book come out due to poor binding. Totally unacceptable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Structural Geology Feb. 9 2011
By geo girl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is interesting, not too hard to read. My copy is just fine but a handful of people in my class have had the binding fall apart on their copies, so that would be something to watch for especially if you were purchasing it used.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great text terrible binding! March 8 2011
By Matthew - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
CONS: Everyone I know who bought this book in hard copy is pissed off! The binding is terrible and the book is falling apart!

PROS: This is the best structural geology text I could have gotten! Its got great colored pictures, easy to follow chapters and concepts, has a nice summary and review questions at the end of almost every chapter, and has magnificent online e-modules to help drive home the main concepts.

I definitly recommend this text, but the e-book version from [...]. This is after all a new book, and Im sure the publishing company knows about their fatal flaw by now, so I would assume they plan on fixing it soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor binding May 17 2011
By David D. Decker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
While the content of the book is good, and the online content is great for helping students understand difficult concepts, the manufacturing of the book leaves a lot to be desired. Within weeks of purchasing this book, pages began to fall out and by half way throught the semester, the book was unuseable because nearly all of the pages had fallen from the binding. The publisher needs to rethink their binding methods on this book. 12 of 15 other students in my class experienced this same problem. DO NOT PURCHASE if you wish to resell or keep for reference!!!!
