Product Description

Review

"Retaining the majesty of language with the clarity of thought, the English Standard Version is a grand accomplishment." Dr. Ravi Zacharias, Author and Speaker "The ESV is the text I have been waiting for my entire life. I appreciate greatly both its fluency of language and its lucidity of expression, thanks to the brilliant work of the translation team. We owe them a very great debt." Rev. Ranald Macaulay, Christian Heritage, The Round Church, Cambridge "After preaching out of the same version for over 10 years, I switched to the ESV Bible. I find it both accurate and easily readable, which is a rare combination." Francis Chan, Author of Crazy Love "I thank God for the ESV. It combines up-to-date accuracy in the text and absolute faithfulness to the words of Scripture with a literary skill and beauty in the translation which, in my judgment, is unsurpassed." Eric J. Alexander, Retired Pastor, St. George's-Tron Parish Church, Scotland "At last a translation that majors on accuracy, combined with a modern, fluent style. I am confident that in time the ESV will become the standard translation for the English-speaking world." The Rt. Rev. Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes, England

The ESV Study Bible is great. One of the best tools I have invested in. It has always helped me in giving good information even in the difficult to understand verses. Although the level of English is at College level, it is easy to understand.
Really happy that Amazon has these in stock and I always get them on the 2nd day. Have bought over 3 of these for my friends and they are all happy with it.
The Study Notes are definitely good. There are a ton of maps, charts and illustrations as well to aid you in your Bible Study.

NOTE: If you wish to have this Bible as a reference tool and you are going to leave this at home most of the time, buy the hard cover version. It costs less and is worth the money if you're not constantly going to turn its pages. If it's going to be your number one Bible where you will be taking it out and using it a lot, I suggest you pay the extra money and get the leather bound Bible. Leather is more durable than the Hard Cover if the Bible is going to be used a lot.

Also, there are some awesome Articles & Resources you get at the back of the original ESV Study Bible (larger in size - [....]) that you don't have in the print version of the ESV Study Bible, Personal Size. To reduce the Bible's size, they have included it as an online resource. So if you want those articles with you, in your Bible, where ever you go, think about getting the ESV Study Bible (link above) instead of the ESV Study Bible, Personal Size.

I use my ESV Study Bible everyday for my devotional time. It's such a great blessing to be able to read more deeply into each verse and use the cross-reference tools. Also, the ESV Study Bible has numerous articles and resources in addition to the study notes which I've only started to get into and already have been greatly impressed by their insight! I strongly recommend this product for any person wanting to seriously study God's Word!

This is the best study Bible available. The scholarly notes are unsurpassed for clarity and depth-of-learning. Detailed maps and pictorial representations (the ark of the covenant, the temple, Jerusalem, etc) supplement the Scriptures at key points. Articles on major doctrines fill the back pages and are written by leading-experts. An all around outstanding resource.

For those not familiar with this Bible it is large, and heavy. The cover is not leather, but feels good to the touch and is quite tender. The pages have little ghosting, and are very readable with the large text. This Bible is very heavy, and awkward to carry. One should not purchase if they are planning to carry it everywhere. The disadvantages of weight are offset by the considerably large text, and great notes which have accompanying maps. This is all easy on the eyes for reading, but it is necessary to have a desk or table to read from as holding this is tiring. I am very impressed, added two ribbons, and read it everyday as my large print, study Bible for meals, devotions, sermon preparation, and general enjoyment. Not something to carry to church or classrooms, but definitely a valued member of my library which will see many years of life and use. A+++

I will never regret buying this product. From a monetary perspective, Amazon was selling it for the cheapest price, which I was happy for (Indigo selling it for 54.99 + tax). I've been Christian all my life and before purchasing this bible, i never had a desire to study the Bible. This was for more than one reason, but one of the main reasons was that i could never connect with what i was reading. This Bible pulls a reader in from the first article, and it changes from reading a historic and God-inspired book to almost like.... a diary written to you from God and other believers before you. It gives you enough background to understand the environment and culture, as well as explains EVERYTHING you might have a question about in the extensive footnotes. I left every passage of scripture with understanding. IF you're serious about studying and understanding the Bible....GET THIS BIBLE.

By all means, get this Bible! Firstly, the ESV is in my opinion the truest and best translation of God's Word. Secondly, the study Bible version is like having a commentary built right into the Bible. Unlike some study Bibles which just provide a trite application, the ESV Study Bible gets to the true meaning of the text, giving greater illumination to God's Word. The notes will be sufficient for many amateur theologians to grasp the main ideas of the passages and the cultural nuances in which they were written. I highly recommend for all Christians who hold to the authority of God's Word.

The Study Notes: I've been reading the Bible daily for 35 years, and as a pastor I've been studying it professionally for 26. This is the best study Bible I've used. The study notes are clear and practical. The illustrations (for example, the tabernacle, and the temples of Solomon, Herod and Ezekiel) really bring the text to life. (A picture really is worth a thousand words!) Maps, charts, and historical and cultural notes beautifully bridge the 3,000 year interval between the Bible text and today - a bridge that brings a great deal of clarity to events and even leads to a few "aha" moments. The articles in the back of this study Bible are very well done, scholarly yet easy to understand. They are a great addition to this study Bible.

The ESV text: I've spent most of my life reading a translation that is admittedly more readable (ie, more like reading a newspaper article) than the ESV. But that's not to say the ESV is hard to understand. Far from it! There are some passages I understand better for having read them in the ESV. And if words, as well as thoughts, are important (and I believe Jesus said they are, in Matthew 5) it's good to have access to an "essentially literal" translation like the ESV.

The book itself: It's not small, and it's not light. I cannot imagine too many people holding it in their hands to read. This is definitely a tabletop book! But the text (both the Bible text and that of the study notes) is easy to read. My 50-plus year old eyes have no trouble reading this study Bible.

The price: I still can't get over the fact that I was able to have such an invaluable resource as this hardcover ESV Study Bible delivered to my door for approximately $40 plus tax! This ESV Study Bible is a library in itself. In terms of quality and value, it's second to none in my opinion.
