Book Description

Mar 30 2004
A few lucky women have been born with style -- think Diana Vreeland and Jacqueline Onassis -- but for most of us, style is something that comes with time and experience. Above all, style begins with a sense of who you are and your self-confidence. Style comes from opening yourself to the world around you -- to books and movies, art, music, travel, and especially to other people.

In this upbeat and engaging book, designer Kate Spade talks about the many people and experiences that have inspired her. For Kate, movies as varied as The Swimmer and The Red Balloon have influenced her vision of style, as have such places as Mexico (where she and her husband, Andy, vacation each year), Napa Valley, and her hometown of Kansas City.

In the pages of Style, you'll find a large section devoted to the colors Kate most loves and suggestions for combining them. Accessories, which are the backbone of her wardrobe, are given full treatment here, including shoes, handbags, hats, gloves, and jewelry; and a portfolio of Kate's personal favorites from her own closet is showcased. Style in the office, evening style, even ideas for style when you travel and when you play are all featured here. The last section of Style focuses on maintaining your wardrobe, including tips on organizing your closet, caring for vintage clothes, and keeping your jewelry in good condition.

Style, with 230 watercolor illustrations, is a wonderfully personal and friendly book intended for readers of all ages and style temperaments. If there's one rule Kate espouses, it's that true style comes when you follow your own rules. Moreover, as the writers William Strunk, Jr., and E. B. White once wrote, "To achieve style, begin by affecting none."

Product Description

From Booklist

Moving from creating handbags to dispensing advice, Kate Spade, of the eponymous fashion house, plunges into publishing with a smart little book akin to Coco Chanel's oh-so-classic little black dress. Surprisingly, her volume yields a goodly amount of verve and veracity, wit and wisdom. It begins with a few questions and answers (called "Have you ever wondered?"), which function as teasers to what lies within. The book is divided into three sections; two are filled with direct advice and the third is a collection of miscellany The advice is classic and always in the best of taste. Barbara Jacobs

I bought this book secondhand and consider it to be a unique find. I enjoyed learning more about Kate Spade the person and I found it much more engaging than the Kate Spade brand coffee table book. This book is a charming and compact combination of autobiography, fashion/art/design history, inspiration board and how-to guide. I understand why other reviewers were disappointed, because they likely expected it to be: (1) your typical style guide and/or (2) designer brand-focused book. I love the atypical layout and eclectic content, i.e. snippets of various facts and quotes interspersed with bright illustrations. The "color" section reminded me a lot of Jonathan Adler's "Happy Chic Colors" book. It's an easy and inspiring read, as Kate Spade's irreverent and cheerful personality shines through.

2.0 out of 5 stars Contrived Kate (and Andy) on Style Mar 29 2004
By AP
Format:Hardcover
When I first heard that Kate Spade was delving into the world of book publishing I was skeptical and I was correct. After reading "Style" and the other 2 in the series, "Manners" and "Occasions" I have come to the conclusion that Kate should stick to what she knows, designing handbags and accessories. While the illustrations are quite charming the book lacks substance. These books would be better titled "Kate and Andy's Favorite Things" or better yet "How to be the Perfect WASP Wannabe". It's all a bit too contrived for me. My advice would be to save your money and buy a handbag instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the content? May 17 2004
By M. Orr
Format:Hardcover
Kate and Andy blew this opportunity by producing a painfully anemic brag book which is less of a style manual and more of an inventory of Kate's wardrobe. If you already love fashion and know something about it, there's nothing new in this insipid read. Vapid quotes from Andy such as "When a shoe is pretty or elegant it communicates to me that the woman is pretty sexy" help rob this brief read of any real thought given to the concept of style, making it more like a free-association of passing thoughts on the subject.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very "personal" style
I was disappointed by this book... the chic cover and simple message implies a more wide-reaching treatment of personal styles and how to discern one's own style. Read more
