While there still is a lot of sampling and electronic work, I think No Style contains a lot more coherent music and samplings than what The Beta Band has been known to do. Steve Mason's vocals are completely soothing and rather droning (a "good" droning), and when you begin to listen to No Style you can either really pay attention to the music and lyrics or you can just space out and enjoy.
I would even go so far to say that No Style is right behind The Three EP's but definitely better than the self-titled release and Hot Shots II. It's nice to see that the apple doesn't fall far from The Beta Band tree. I would love to hear more!
In a previous review, I saw something that astounded me: Hot Shots II was mind-blowing?? This begs the question "Have you *heard* the 3EPs?!"
At any rate, fan of the Beta Band or no, at a cheap price, this is so incredibly worth picking up, I can't even put it into words. While every track here is not earth-shatteringly good, I Walk The Earth IS. Head-bobbingly, toe-tappingly, sing-along-ingly catchy, this would have been one of the top 10 great pop songs of 2000... if anyone had heard of it. That song alone is worth buying the album, not to mention "I Love You" and "Time To Get Up".
It has its low points, like any other. "Untitled", for example, is repetitive and largely unremarkable, it sounds a little like a bored kid with a Casio. "Niggling Discrepancy", even with its driving sound goes stale after about the first minute, and by the time it's over at 3:45, you're relieved. And "Little White" is boring and depressing.
Finishing up with "Eye 'O The Dug" is perfect. Still catchy, decidedly silly, in my opinion any song in which the singer forgets the lyrics, and moves me to 'bark' is good in my book.
Now, I wouldn't go as far as saying its better than the absolute mind-blowing Hot Shots II (album of the year 2001, in my opinion), but its really, really close.
The opening track, "I walk the earth" is quite possibly the best Beta Band-related song I've heard as of yet.
With the low price on this one, you just can't lose. A must-have for Beta Band fans.
