You can see that it's the author's first book..., Jun 26 2000
This review is from: Subterranean (Mass Market Paperback)
The pluses: the author wanted to create a speleological action thriller with some scientific background. As books on such a theme are rather rare, I can say that the plot is interesting, the mythology well invented, the beginning is intriguing, the pace is quick. The minuses: - book reminds an action movie script in language and in characters: "good guys" and, in particularly, one "bad guy" - of course an Arabian terrorist (!); rather blue print main heroes - Ashley, who's annoying and screams her head off without a reason especially in the beginning of the book and Mr Nice guy with blue eyes and troublesome past and with a hereditary telepathic link with the underground aborigines that of course saves everyone in the end. And there is also Ashley's son whose existence is justified by him getting kidnapped by the bad guy in the end of the book (to add suspense, undoubtedly.) - I agree with some other reviewers who note rather poor language of the book. Especially funny is when such words as "marsupials", "diatoms", "monotremes" etc pop up to add up a "scientific flavour" to this underground monster chase. Resume: a challenging attempt to create a "cave thriller", but as the book is too short, the plot is predictable and characters one dimensional. For beach reading try it, for some REAL STUFF - be glued to JEFF LONG's "DESCENT" and FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!

starts off good, Feb 6 2011
I like James Rollins novels, they are a great mix of science, suspense, and action, but this one falls short and is more of a rehash of common story lines and situations.

It's fun for a while, Sep 28 2009
This review is from: Subterranean (Mass Market Paperback)
I just finished this book, my fourth from James Rollins. The others I've read were Amazonia, Maps of Bones and The Judas Strain. The first 2-3 pages set a good tone for the book, but then, it went on for another 60-70 pages of character introduction with little advancement in the main story. I might have given up if this was my first read from James Rollins, but having read the others, I hung on and he came through. The story then moved along at a good pace with mystery, suspense and danger just lurking around the corner. Towards the end though, it got a little silly (I am willing to buy the lead character's special ability, just the writing was a bit...silly), and at the very end, it just seem like he ran out of paper and had to wrap up in a hurry, also there were issues that I think were not properly addressed. All in all, it kept me hooked for quite a while and I enjoyed it. The rating I gave this book is relative to the others from him that I have read, I considered Amazonia a 4 and the other two a 4/5. As others pointed out, this was the author's first book, and it's really not bad for a first effort.
