I was browsing through Border Books one day in the music section, seeing the usual how to get a record deal books and happened to spy John's book decided to check it out.
It seemed to be a book that seemed to straddle the business side of music but also in a way that musicians could understand and use.
I have used lots of business plan books and marketing books and even went to S.C.O.R.E., but never found someone knowledgable in business who knew much about the music business. "Succeeding in Music" seemed to fill that gap offering hard core business advice, goal setting that made sense and an understanding of what us music business people need to understand and do.
I am not quite through with the book, but, it has helped me wrap my mind around what I need to do to restart my music business career and stay in it.
Now, if only John had a goal setting/tracking software that went with the book (Mac and Windows please) then we would be really on to something.

John Stiernberg has written a masterpiece for those interested in making a living in music. Whether you are considering a new career or interested in common sense advice on improving your business, Succeeding In Music is a must read. As a former Hippy wannabe, I was suspicious of business people and principles. Thankfully, John has presented the business of music in a very positive, easily understandable manner and helped me realize that the more I know about business, the better equipped I am to not only succeed, but to do it on my terms. I can't encourage you enough to pick up a copy of Succeeding in Music and get busy taking control of your career.

I wish I had read this book long ago as it would have saved me $1000's of dollars and
perhaps even made my career develop faster. It's a great investment for every working musician,
be it part time gigs or full time on the road.
But 'Succeeding In Music' is not only an outstanding tool for working musicians
and those who wish they were, it is a wonderful resource for anyone involved
in the arts. With information every small business owner can use this is
a must for your library!

I am currently working on my business plan and have found this book extremely helpful. It's amzing how liberating and invigorating writing stuff down is. Once you start, you can't stop! It's an amazing chain of events that's just as creative as writing a song... AND FINISHING IT!
