Product Description

Book Description

The wide appeal of this first dedicated guide to Sudan will satisfy the needs of aid workers, ecotravelers, and those with diverse interests in topics such as archaeology, travel photography, hiking, and diving.

From the Back Cover

While the crisis in the western region is devastating, the end to civil war in the south has inspired a spirit of optimism in Sudan.
This is a land of delightful contrast, boasting desert caravans, lush river valleys and more pyramids than Egypt itself. It offers the intrepid visitor a fulfilling cultural experience in one of Africa's most hospitable countries.
Paul Clammer shows in this, the first comprehensive guide to Sudan, that beyond troubled Darfur lies an extraordinary country, and a culture of kindness to strangers. Discover the archaeological riches of Kush and Nubia, scuba dive in the Red Sea, or relax on a Nile cruise through colorful Khartoum.

Inside you will find information on:

* Security, visas and border crossings
* Where to stay and eat, and how to get around
* Detailed coverage of culture and history
* Sudan's civil war in context, and information for aid workers

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and eloquent, Jan 3 2006
By Jac Van Der Linden - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sudan: The Bradt Travel Guide (Paperback)
I recently visited Sudan and somebody gave me this book.

I only saw Khartoum, Omdurman and the ancient sites of Naqa and Meroe.

However for these locations and for the general backgrounds on Sudan and the conflicts that still rage there the book gave excellent and very up to date backgrounds.

It is practical on the ground, but after returning I decided to get a copy for myself as a reference book.

There are just the minor details which will need a correcion for the moment, like recently some new hotels opened.

And the Greek-Orthodox church mentioned turned out to be a Coptic church, and apart from the Sufi zikr location mentioned in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city, there are numerous other zikrs, but those perhapt should be kept secret for tourism.
