Book Description

Jan. 4 2010 Summer Bridge Activities
Summer Bridge Activities(TM): Bridging Grades Fourth to Fifth prepares your rising fifth grader for a successful school year. The activities in this book are designed to review the skills that your child mastered in fourth grade, preview the skills that he or she will learn in fifth grade, and help prevent summer learning loss. No matter how wonderful your child’s classroom experiences are, your involvement outside of the classroom is crucial to his or her academic success. Together with Summer Bridge Activities(TM), you can fill the summer months with learning experiences that will deepen and enrich your child’s knowledge and prepare your child for the upcoming school year. --Summer Bridge Activities(TM) is the original workbook series developed to help parents support their children academically during the summer months. While many other summer workbook series are available, Summer Bridge Activities(TM) continues to be the series that teachers recommend most. --The three sections in this workbook correspond to the three months of traditional summer vacation. Each section begins with a goal-setting activity, a word list, and information for parents about the fitness and character development activities located throughout the section. Bonus extension activities that encourage outdoor learning, science experiments, and social studies exercises are located at the end of each section. --Stickers, flash cards, and a colorful award certificate are also included. 160 full-color pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for every child June 12 2012

Would I recommend this? Yes.
I have the Summer Bridge books for my 5,6,9, and 10 year old. They all seem to be an easy and quick way for them to keep on top of the skills they have learned and even move beyond what they already know.

My child sits down every day, without me asking, and begins her daily lessons. I am very thrilled to have found this series of books. I have 4 kids and I struggle with the fact that every fall they are doing the same thing that they did the previous year, only they have completely forgotten how to do it. It's frustrating as a parent to realize you child has lost parts of their education that they worked so hard to learn. I get particularly frustrated with math and grammar and fortunately this book covers this area in some form almost every day.

The book begins with a skills matrix that explains what will be worked on day. Subjects that are covered include: Addition, Data analysis, Division, Fitness, Fractions, Geometry, Grammar (this is worked on the most often), Language Arts, Measurement, Mixed Math Practice, Multiplication, Puzzles, Science, Social Studies, Subtraction, Time & Money, Vocabulary, Word Problems, Writing, and Reading Comprehension.

There are flash cards at the very end of the book, and of course the answer key. The pages are all perforated and easy to remove. I hate to admit it but I am sometimes not as smart as the book (*hangs head in shame*) Usually I can look at answer and then remember what it is we are doing and then move on to explain it like the smart teacher that I am.

The important thing for me is that when it comes to the end of each day I can look over what she has done. If we come across any section that she is having trouble with I stop and go over the information until I am sure she understands it. My child is not in a class of 25 where she can slip by pretending she understands. I can see when she is having trouble and remedy the problem.

Each subject covered has a very small section, so it really is important for me to look it all over in order to stop and remedy what my child seems to be stumbling through. She is not in a class of 25; she can't pretend to understand. I can see she is having trouble so we stop and try to better understand and then move on.
I am sure I am not the only parent that has to remind a child to read every day. This book has a Summer Reading List. This list is important to me because I find it hard to pick out books that are both fun to read and will also (hopefully) improve on the skills needed for the year to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for us. May 23 2011

I haven't used the 4th to 5th grade version yet, but we've used the ones for younger kids for a couple of years now. Seems to cover all the essentials and throw in some fun activities too. My daughter needs a very structured environment, and along with using camps and sports to keep her busy, I also use the Summer Bridge series - keeps her busy and maintains her skills at the same time. Certainly plan to continue on with this series. FYI: Amazon also had the best prices I've found on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for July 28 2010

Last summer was painful without this product. I like the variety it offers. Some days are thicker than others while others are lighter. Overall the daily exercises are right in between. Depending on her strengths/weaknesses and the thick to light level it takes her 10min-20min to complete her daily work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad review course for the summer Sept. 14 2012

I bought this for my rising 5th grader, who tends to view summer as a do-nothing-but-have-free-time-to-do-as-I-please period. Gave her a page a day form this book, and told her to do it quickly, so she wouldn't get fed up, distracted, bored, zoned out, etc. The exercises vary by subject daily (e.g. today she might get math but not tomorrow) and the book is divided into 3 main sections. While I loathed to grade the "answers may vary" exercises, I knew these to be essential because reading comprehension and writing would be extensive in 5th grade.

Great workbook that refreshes work done during school year. it is divided into 20 days so each day child has three sheets to do. Just enough to keep them busy but not exhausted. i have been buying those books for the past 4 years for all my kids. Answer sheet is at the back, certificate of completion, stickers, flash cards that can be cut. No other like it.
