3.0 out of 5 stars Summer Of Learning Life's Lessons, Mar 5 2008

This review is from: Summer of the Colt (DVD)
Set on a ranch in the Pampas Region of Argentina, director/screenwriter Andre Melancon details the lives of three children and their grandfather during a special summer together.

The trio are pursuing different avenues - the youngest befriends a puppy, the 13-year-old sister struggles with leaving her childhood years behind - while David follows the trail of breaking and training his first horse.

The cinematography is wonderful and - though the script is the typical coming-of-age, coming to grips with the end of life - the characters are believable.

Released in 1989, it predates the re-emergence of the horse in Hollywood through successful Thoroughbred racing movies like Seabiscuit and Dreamer. The pace of Summer of the Colt is based on living on a farm, so it is a less-rapid race with life's lessons, as the ultimate timepiece ticks away.

"Summer of the Colt" was made in 1991 and is a foreign film
with English dialogue. It is an award winning film
beautifully photographed on location at a horse ranch on
the pampas of Argentina.

It is a gentle story that is sincere and touching about
family disagreements and misunderstandings told in a simple
and fascinating way. It is a refreshing new look at the
problems associated with growing up and getting old.

The story centres around a belligerent and demanding
grandfather who owns and runs the ranch. It is apparent
that because of his bad attitude he lost his son to city
life and now his grandchildren visit the ranch every year
for their summer vacation.

His eldest grandson, who is still a young boy, now becomes
a target for his grandfather's miserable ways and he
apparently repeats the same mistakes on him as he did on
his own son.

The children who are all sensitive and charming, find it
difficult to adapt to their grandfather who is proud,
stubborn, demanding and bitter. The grandfather wants the
eldest boy to one day take over the ranch but the goals he
sets for the boy are too high and he eventually rebels.

The grandfather learns in the end that he must change his
ways to understand and retain the love of his grandchildren.

The whole of the cast handle their roles to perfection with
feeling and understanding, especially Hector Alterio as the
grandfather Federico
and the children:
Alexandra London-Thompson as Laura
Juan De Benedictis as Daniel
Santiago Gonzales Crende as Martin
Mariano Bertolini as Felipe.

"Summer of the Colt" makes for compelling viewing and is a
joy to watch. It is suitable for the whole family
including the young ones.

Highly recommended.

The story was okay. The quality of the images was poor. I hope that there will be a remastering of this disk?
