Product Description

From AudioFile

Julia, a 40-year-old wife and mother, survives a boating incident that claims nine other lives. As the police investigate the accident, she begins to question what really happened. Narrator Linda Emond depicts Julia's search for meaning with tones of angst and suppressed anger that change to notes of confidence as Julia comes into her own. Noah, another survivor, becomes a close ally and friend. With wonderful vocal range, Emond depicts Noah and Julia's attraction. Tension builds when the accident turns into a murder investigation. Tight pacing, realistic family portrayals, and deft narration make this compelling romantic suspense. From Booklist

Ever prolific and popular Delinsky has often considered the phenomena of near-death experiences granting second chances in life, but rather than rely on hackneyed notions of heroes rising Phoenix-like from the ashes to triumph over adversity, Delinsky grounds her characters in the here-and-now and presents them with dilemmas more familiar than fanciful. Such is the case in her latest work, a tale of three people quite literally thrown together following a boating accident off the Maine coast that spares them while taking the lives of nine others. At 40 Julia is an obedient wife, dutiful daughter, and devoted mother, and has planned a visit to her aunt Zoe to reflect on her obligation to herself versus her ties to her family. Rescued by fellow passenger Noah Prine, Julia feels connected to him by virtue of their shared tragedy while also being drawn to Kim Colella, the other survivor, whose whereabouts at the time of the crash provide a shadowy subplot. As a gentle romance blossoms between Julia and Noah, each evaluates who they were before the accident and who they hope to become in its aftermath. Once again, Delinsky excels at combining a compelling mystery with an insightful portrayal of captivating people facing challenges both ordinary and dramatic. Carol Haggas

4.0 out of 5 stars A great summer read..., Jul 8 2004
By Mercedes L. Johnmeyer "The Most Happy" (Kingsland, GA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really got into this book right from the first chapter. The book starts off with a ferry accident that leaves only Julia, Noah, and Kim alive while 9 others are killed. It deals with the personal struggle Julia goes through to find her true self, and why she was spared, as well as the other two. There's also a little mystery thrown in about how and why the accident happend in the first place.
I must say though, sometimes Julia's wish-washyness got on my nerves, and I found myself wanting to yell at her to stand up for herself...but I think that's good when a book gets you so involved in the characters and their lives. I really recommend this book to anyone's that's interested...it's a wonderful little summer read that will hold your attention from the first page to the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars What if?, Jun 29 2004
By Annie "bookwishes4" (United States) - See all my reviews
After being so disappointed with Delinskys last book Flirting With Pete I was not sure if I wanted to read The Summer I Dared but I am glad that I did. It is a wonderfully written story about what happens after we are faced with a life altering incident. In The Summer I Dared you will meet three very important people Julia, Noah, and Kim - the only survivors of a ferry accident that killed nine others. As you watch these three charactors live through the pain and guilt of being the only survivors, you will be asking yourself... What if something like this happened to me?

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for a summer weekend, Jun 15 2004
Just finished Barbara Delinsky's latest book, The Summer I Dared. Her last two books have been really good. They are both very fast-paced and have a good story line. She has a special gift about writing about human relationships that very few authors have. You will certainly enjoy this one.
