Book Description

A writer arrives on the Western Isles looking for peace of mind, but his meeting with three strangers completes a magical square that sets off a tale of madness and terror. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From AudioFile

The mental image that recurs during the telling of this story is of a dark green, brown, and stony landscape. This is the continuing picture of a man gone to find peace for himself in an unprepossessing part of Scotland. While he deals with his own demons, he meets a fierce scamp called the Red Wolf. As Stanley McGeagh reads the story, his use of the Scottish accent colors any part of the landscape Morris West might have missed in his writing. McGeagh's burr is charming and certainly defines the Scottish characters, as does his Gaelic speech. But what's difficult for the listener is the dropping of each sentence ending to a depth that one cannot hear. If that's the way of the language, it should be adjusted a bit for the untrained ear. 4.0 out of 5 stars A mythic journey to the highlands, Dec 6 1999

This review is from: Summer of the Red Wolf: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is the story of a man struggling with anomie who travles to scotland to fight his inner demons and discovers love, honor and himself along the way. This book has most of Mr. West's normal themes but captures the feelings of restlessness which seem to be so common in these modern times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lingers on the mind long after read, Mar 18 2005
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Summer of the Red Wolf (Audio CD)
Dramatically narrated by Stanley McGeagh, Summer Of The Red Wolf by Morris West is the riveting story of one man who struggled to deal with and ultimately overcome the complexities and torments of his everyday life. Traveling to Scotland to fight his own inner demons, he discovers love, honor, and himself along the way. Morris West is an experienced and accomplished novelist whose books have been translated into 27 languages. Summer Of The Red Wolf, which brilliantly showcases those feelings of restlessness and yearnings for self-discovery which so hallmarks contemporary life, is another of his masterfully written, reader engaging novels which tend to linger on the mind long after they are read and put back upon the shelf. Also available in an audiocassette format, this 8 CD Bolinda library edition is a superbly recorded, complete and unabridged production which is confidently recommended for library audiobook collections.

This novel spoke to me 20 years ago and I wanted to read it again. It is a story about love and finding oneself in a wild, beautiful place. It helped me get through a rough time. Written by a thoughtful writer who had several other wonderful books, I connected to the wildness, to the passions, to the torment. This is not about current times, but is universal, nonetheless.
