Product Description

From Amazon.com

Judy Blume's Summer Sisters is ably brought to life through a spirited reading by Annabeth Gish (Mystic Pizza, Shag.) Her fresh, youthful voice captures the essence of Vix and Caitlin, two preadolescent classmates who forge a powerful friendship while summering together on Martha's Vineyard. As their summers together continue, they discover boys, establish crushes, then move on to the more serious business of love and sex. With each new season their relationship becomes more complicated, sometimes verging on destructive.

This abridgement leaves Vix and Caitlin's story fully intact, but family backgrounds and some minor players are glossed over. Gish presents a fairly straightforward reading, with no attempt to take on male characters, accents, or otherwise assign unique voices to each person. Instead, she chooses to change inflection, intonation, and attitude to reflect their words and thoughts. Gish's narration is a pleasure to listen to and brings a new dimension to Blume's story of two friends who have so much in common, yet are nothing alike. From Library Journal

Blume goes adult again in this story of golden-girl Caitlin and working-class Vix, who share a summer on Martha's Vineyard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sisterly Bonding, Mar 29 2004
By "kraziazn808" (kaneohe, hi, USA) - See all my reviews
As the years go by, we learn from our childhood experiences. The environment they grew up in also plays a role in their behavior. As the story goes on, we can see how two different girls share something in common. They swore to be sisters at heart, but aren't there some limits that sisters have to abide by?
I enjoyed reading this book. It kept my interest regarding teen issues. It touched on issues such as peer pressure, self confidence, and family situations.
This story first starts off in 1977 when they were children growing up in New Mexico. They spend their first summer together on Caitlins vineyard on a island. They share experiences with each other learning from both failures as well as sucesses. As they grow older, they become stronger mentally and go on their own ways. Knowing the differenes between them, they still have a link that makes them sisters at heart.
As a teenager, i can look back and reflect on my past experiences . Reading this book reminds me of the morals i have set as a child and have let go as the years flown by. Now i reflect and strenghten those morals that has made me.
I recommend this book to teenagers who need to look at life in a new light. As years go by, we all change and forget the simple joys we know. The simple joys are the joys that help make life more enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good chick book, Jul 6 2004
By vraiblonde (Maryland) - See all my reviews
Normally I go for Clancy, Vince Flynn and Nelson DeMille but this is a good, light summer read. Guys shouldn't bother - this is definitely a chick book - but the ladies will enjoy it. I got annoyed by the ending - it was pretty abrupt and you never find out what happened to Caitlin. However, the Somers' were a good portrayal of a rich, eccentric family and Vix's family was dead-on realistic. And sometimes extraordinary girls like Vix do fall for shallow boys like Bru.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer Sisters, Jun 29 2004
By Leslie Miller (Charlotte, NC) - See all my reviews
I absolutely adore this book. In fact I read it at least once a year. I have a summer sister that I have taken along on family vacations to the beach ever summer for 10 yrs. and this book reminds me so much of us and our adventures. I would postively recommend it to anyone. In fact I probably take it to the beach with me this year too. :)
