5.0 out of 5 stars A n Outstanding Series Aug 22 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
But do yourself a favor by purchasing Hunter's Oath and Hunter's Death. These two "prequel" books set the stage for the trilogy. After reading this book, I went to those two, which filled in a great deal of information, notably about Jewel Markess.

This series works it's way through a remarkable tale and I am waiting with baited breath for the final book. To hold myself in check, I'm re-reading them all. Each one deepens and enriches with each re-read. Bring the last one on!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read Aug 2 2003
By Erica
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is one of the more imaginitive books since Piers Anthony's Incarnation series. While there are no similarities, the pure originality of the book shines through.

The story itself was wonderful, albeit somewhat slow in the beginning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hardly for everyone but still enthralling. Feb 22 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
If the words "political intrigue" within a fantasy setting make you grind your teeth, I would recommend staying far away from this book. Most of it is filled with things such as political intrigue and the machinations of people trying to claw their way up the food chain.

Now, then, that warning aside, I must say that this is one of the more enthralling books I've had the fortune to read in a while. Given all the planning, sometimes it seems the plot is only slightly thinner than chilled molasses and it moves at about that speed. However, Michelle West describes everything in beautiful detail and her characters are all so richly developed.

It also helps that she has designed very thoroughly the societies in which the characters live. The contrast between the Domain and the Northern Empire is very interesting to see, especially as the narration switches between the two. It helps to put into perspective how well thought-out the cultures are.

Overall, this title is a very enjoyable read for anyone who relishes character development and a rich world for the characters to wander in.

2.0 out of 5 stars convoluted

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult
My response to this book is complicated.

The author is clearly not a hack writer. The writing style is difficult to skim or read quickly because of its originality. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars approach with caution, good but ..........................
I have to begin by offering a caution against starting these books. Underneath it all ,[I will explain 'it all' in a moment],the base storyline in these 4 books is very good. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars slow to start, but absorbing
It took me a while to get into this book, because I had difficulty making it past West's prose style--very ornate, with frequent use of repetition as a stylistic device. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring and difficult to follow
Ms. West/Sagura writes well and her sentences are well-constructed, but she skips all over the place without explanations for the reader so it is impossible to follow the story. Read more
