From Amazon

Kenneth Oppel gives a bat's-eye view of the horrors of animal testing in Sunwing, the sequel to his popular and award-winning novel for middle readers, Silverwing. Shade, the lost baby bat of the first book, has rejoined his colony only to lose his freedom as the bats plunge into a mysterious human building they believe is paradise. The building's vast interior forest, with its teeming insects and eerie absence of owls, certainly seems like Eden. But Shade and his Brightwing friend Marina, now young adults, discover that the humans have a sinister motive for befriending the bats--they are using them as unwitting suicide bombers over a jungle war zone.

In addition, the bats are threatened once again by Goth, the giant jungle bat with the cannibalistic tastes and irrepressible knack for survival of Hannibal Lecter. This time he has a plan for making his god, Zotz, supreme: to be explicit (and Oppel is), by ripping out the hearts of 100 imprisoned bats, owls, and rats. Shade's and Marina's race to save their companions from this two-pronged threat makes for exciting and occasionally terrifying reading.

Once again Oppel immerses readers in the world view of his tiny flying mammals. It becomes second nature to see things upside down, hide in crevices, squint at the brightness of the sun, and sense danger through sound vibrations. Particularly chilling is his portrayal of the humans' laboratory, with its concentration-camp-like indifference to life. In Sunwing, Oppel offers breathless suspense while eliciting our compassion for these misunderstood creatures of the night. From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 In this sequel (S&S, 2000) to Kenneth Oppel's Silverwing (S&S, 1999), Shade, a silverwing bat, and Marina, a brightwing, continue their search for Shade's father. They are drawn to and enter a pseudo forest built by humans and, although the bats there call it "Paradise," Shade soon realizes it is a prison for the animals. He is selected along with other bats, and a disc is sewn on their abdomens. When they are flown to a target and released, Shade just manages to escape the fate of most of the bats - exploding when they hit the target. Shade joins a group of other survivors and learns that his father is possibly still alive but about to be sacrificed along with other bats and animals by a colony of vampire bats led by Shades old nemesis, Goth. Shade enlists the help of rats and owls to stage a dramatic rescue. John McDonough's word-for-word reading of this exciting tale is well-paced, expressive, and clear. Although this story will be better appreciated by listeners familiar with the first book - and fan's of that book will certainly want to hear this one - this sequel stands on its own. -Louise Sherman, formerly Anna C. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up book Mar 2 2010
By Steven R. McEvoy HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The first book in this series, Silverwing, won 11 awards; this book won 8. It continues the saga of Shade a young silverwing bat. He has been in search of his father. He believes it is linked to the silver bands he has been tagged with and that his father was also tagged with. He discovers a mysterious forest inside a human building with plenty of bugs to eat, fresh water and thousands of bats. It is also a haven, free from the tyranny of birds, and especially owls. Yet his friends are not so sure it is the place to be.

He and his friends are soon swept up into a world they could never have imagined, transported to Latin America and the jungles. They soon become embroiled with the Vampyrum Spectrum bats and their king Goth. The little silverwing with heart, busts battle bats with 3 foot wing spans and other animals and creatures formerly unknown to him. Can Shade unite rats, small bats and even owl's in a battle against Goth who is trying to turn the world into eternal night? The story woven around mythology and legends and actual animal behaviour is wonderful to read - it is a page turner and you will not be able to put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Dark Page-Turner. Loved it! Nov 8 2008
By Nicola Manning HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Silverwing and other members of his tribe go on a journey and search for his father. Their final destination lands them deep in the South American jungle. What they had hoped to discover is far from what they actually find. I can't go into any more details of the plot as it would give away too much. The plot was based on an amazingly disturbing bit of US military history.

This is a dark story, one that is not expected. The evil creatures are very evil and there are scenes that make you squirm. The characters are compelling and life-like. A page-turner of a book that made me stay up late to finish. All the plot lines left open from the first book were resolved and the book has a complete ending giving no indication that there will be another book to follow. It will be interesting to see where the plot goes in the last book, Firewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunwing- A first rate sequel July 19 2006
By Exodus
Format:Paperback
Over the last few days, I have built up my reputation as a strong Silverwing advocate. This does not mean I don't like Sunwing, far from it.

Sunwing is a new book with a new set of problems. A great children's adventure, Sunwing is not without it's fundamental questions. I have seen many of the places in airship documentary books. They are well described, but changed realistically during the novel's false war. Although I do not approve of the author's somewhat haphazard placement of an aztec temple within the book, I believe it is a worthy addition to the series.

Unusual for a second sequel, I prefer firewing, however.

Your friendly, thirteen year-old Exodus.
