Ouch!, April 28 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Superfly (1972 Film) (Audio CD)
This one will hit you. If it's not the waa waa guitar, it's the killer basslines. If it's not the killer basslines, it's the jungle drums in the background. If it's not the crazy jungle drums, it's the incredible socially relevant lyrics. This set came out a good 15 years before I was born, but I can still relate to the problems presented tracks like "Freddie's Dead" and "Pusherman". This album is a classic, ridiculously good. Hats off to the late, great Curtis Mayfield on this one.

GET THE DELUXE EDITION INSTEAD!, April 11 2004
This review is from: Superfly (1972 Film) (Audio CD)
The Deluxe 25th Anniversary Edition has an extra CD of unreleased material. Unlike most "bonus disks," which are pure filler, this one is definitely worthwhile. The instrumentals and demos are great. I think I listen to the extra disk more than the original soundtrack! Believe me, you will regret not getting the deluxe edition.

Curtis is the Pusherman of uncut dope music!, Jan 18 2004
This review is from: Superfly (1972 Film) (Audio CD)
What words can be used to fully describe and convey the awesome genius that is Curtis Mayfield's Superfly album, one of the Must Own records of soul?
Having led The Impressions for a decade, Curtis stepped into his solo career with two incredible albums, 1970s 'Curtis' and 1971s 'Roots'. However, providing the soundtrack for this blaxploitation film obviously lit a creative fire in the man that has never been equalled.
Full of atmospheric arrangements and some of the most memorable and classic grooves and riffs ever constructed, Superfly is the greatest R&B album of all time. From start to finish, the listening pleasure never lets up. 'Little Child Running Wild' is my eternal classic Curtis cut, while joints like 'Pusherman' and 'Freddies Dead' fonk HARD! but the title track and all the other numbers are also hitting in a major way.
Not much else new can be said about this album, so I'll just reiterate, this is Must Own material from a True Genius. Seek out the original, not a re-release with 'bonus' clutter that Curtis left on the cutting room floor.
