5.0 out of 5 stars An Apple a Day Keeps your Doctor Away, Mar 9 2007

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)

I like the book for two main reasons:

1. It presents good nutritional information for Good Foods
2. It provides many recipes for preparing tasty, nutritional, and healthy meals.

The book is an absolute MUST for anyone concerned about health and nutrition. Another good book that will support and complement "SuperFoods" is "Can We Live 150 Years". I think it is best to have both of them as they complement each other

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots I didn't know about!, Mar 11 2004

At 58, I've read a lot of nutrition and diet books in my life. This is one of the best. It's clear, understandable and offers new information, at least to me. Each of the 14 superfoods has its own chapter. The information is easy to understand for neophytes and armchair "nutrition experts" alike. For many readers, it reinforces the good reasons for continued selection of foods we already eat. It also "introduces" foods like pumpkin, walnuts, black and green tea, and others that I've just now added to my menu. I'm really excited about all the healthful reasons to continue eating beans, broccoli, wild salmon, nuts and much more. Really a worthwhile book. I've recommended it to my family and friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars mostly good advice, Jan 3 2004

The book emphasizes eating a "whole foods diet." That involves getting your vitamins from food rather than supplements, consuming much more fiber than the average american diet does. I disagree with a 3 of the superfoods (salmon, turkey and yogurt). It's possible to get your Omega-3 FAs from non-fish sources. Between flax, soy, walnuts and taking a vegetarian DHA supplement, eating fat and cholesterol-laden fish or taking a fish oil capsule isnt necessary. Wild salmon get it from eating the phytoplankton, so why can't we? Also, why is turkey a superfood? The author says it's a good source of protein, low in saturated fat (compared to other animal foods, I suppose). It's also full of cholesterol, even the leanest turkey breast. Yogurt is a good source of calcium and active cultures, says the author. Well, many of the other superfoods are better sources of calcium than yogurt. And you can get active cultures from Cultured Soy Yogurt, which is often fortified with calcium. Soy is it's own category of superfoods, so why advocate dairy yogurt when cultured soy is available, delicious and nutritious? I think superfoods should not only provide super nutrition, but be super for the environment. All the other 11 Superfoods in this book are plant foods, and for that I commend the author. If everyone in America switched to this diet, I'm sure their health and the health of the environment would greatly improve. However, I don't think salmon, turkey and yogurt really need to be on the list with the Superfoods.

I saw this book on a shelf with other diet books being promoted, I suppose, for New Year's Resolution ideas. It was the only book among dozens that wasn't promoting the current fad of low-carb, meat-heavy diets.

I also recommend two other books: "The Food Revolution" and "The Okinawa Program."
