5.0 out of 5 stars The Cheesiest Superhero Movie Ever Made!, May 30 2004
This review is from: Supergirl: Director's Cut (Widescreen) (DVD)
"Supergirl" is produced by the same Salkind folks who made the four Superman movies. But they must have run out of budget for this one. The end product is a really cheesy take on the Maid of Might, Kara Zor-El, the original Supergirl. In fact, it's so cheesy that watching this DVD is pure nostalgic fun. I'm a child of the cheesy 1980s anyway!

The flying effects here are not as good as those in the Superman movies but then who needs effects. Helen Slater as Supergirl/Linda Lee is the best special effect in this movie. Additional points should be given in that this movie is set in the Superman movie continuity - we get to meet Lucy Lane (Lois' sister) and Jimmy Olsen. A newsreader on a car radio informs us that Superman is off-planet at this time, thus explaning his rather glaring absence in this movie.

The story centers on Kara's childish mistake in Argo City that supposedly doomed the city unless she can make amends by coming to earth to retrieve something called the Omegahedron (or something like that!). Unfortunately this Omega-thingy is now in the hands of two ugly aunties (Faye Dunaway is one of them) who lusts after this young man (can't even remember his name). This young man is also in love with Supergirl. Then the auntie (Faye) decides to bring about the end of the world. And yes, Peter O'Toole also appears (although I still can't see the purpose of his character in the film). In short, a really beautiful Supergirl fights two aunties over a young man and Peter O'Toole makes an appearance. That's it.

Get it today and have a cheesy good time!

1.0 out of 5 stars This is why DC Comics movies don;t work...., April 25 2004
This review is from: Supergirl: Director's Cut (Widescreen) (DVD)
Actually they do, but only if the film makers really work hard on them. The DC universe is full of characters who live in a very retro/comic book world with mostly fictional cities, high sounding newspaper and scientific companies like the Daily Planet or Star Labs. To create such worlds on film is very difficult and often they do not work somewhere between the comics page, the screenplay, and the final version of the movie.
In the early 1980;s, The Salkinds still had the Superman movie rights and this included Supergirl, a movie that was really not much better then Superman III which was in production at the same time. The casting does not work, Helen Slater is unbeliveable as Supergirl. The sets and special effects look like they were done on a much lower budget. The flying sequences look unbeliveable as they were done using cheaper process screening on film. This director's cut looks like it was edited in a very cheap/fast way. It does not work. This movie will be no better wither a director's cut or the theater release because it wasn't a great movie to begin with. You can not make a bad soup better by simply adding more of the same not so great vegtables. Although the Salkinds long since lost the movie rights to Superman, DC Comics and Warner Brothers still have yet to make a great movie based on their main heroes. We are still waiting here.

5.0 out of 5 stars NEEDED FUN, April 6 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Supergirl: Director's Cut (Widescreen) (DVD)
SUPERGIRL HELPED ME OUT FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE. I DEAL WITH A CONDITION CALLED CP. THIS DISABILITY PREVENTS ME FROM WALKING UNDER MY OWN POWER. I ADMIRED SUPERGIRL'S PHYSICAL ABILITIES AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO NOT ONLY WALK BUT FLY. I BECAME STRONG AND ABLE TO FLY AS A YOUNG CHILD IN A PRETEND WORLD. NOW AS AN ADULT I WATCH THE DVD AND REMEMBER MY YOUNG MIND AND HEART AS WELL AS THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING TIME TO HELP OTHERS. LIKE SUPERGIRL DID THOUGHOUT THE MOVIE.
