Product Description

Review

The overall quality is excellent. Perhaps what makes the book particularly valuable is the fact that most materials included are ones not particularly familiar to the average teacher. This increases the possibilities enormously, and teachers should find this an invaluable resource as they develop units of study and identify materials worth purchasing. This book is certainly worth purchasing! (Voya )

...a solid compilation, buttressed by good background information and practical tips. Sure to be valuable for teachers and librarians serving youth and as a tool for the teaching of YA literature. (Booklist )

Book Description

This unique compilation offers the public librarian, the library media specialist, and the teacher a literary analysis of selected titles to supplement literature programs. The selection represents titles of above-average literary value for upper elementary, junior high, high school and beyond. The emphasis is on analysis and appreciation. The general body of work covers contemporary fiction; other parts include unique titles, novels to teach, video views of literature and society, and significant older titles that deserve another look. The analysis of each title offers a complete plot summary, suggested themes, significant quotes, interest/maturity level, evaluation, suggested use, and book review citations. In the "Novels to Teach" section, the authors also include reasons and suggestions for teaching particular novels, essay questions with suggested answers; glances at characters; and extensive study options. The goal is to change and enrich lives in the quest for literary literacy-to go beyond a superficial reading of the book for a deeper look between the lines-to encourage students to question, understand, and respond.
