Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Supralingua, literally meaning "beyond the spoken word, beyond language" is another stunning percussion album from former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and the loose grouping of international collaborators that is Planet Drum. Including the world-famous Zakir Hussein, Sikiru Adepoju and Graceland bassist Bakithi Kumalo, a similar band was responsible for Mickey Hart's fabulous earlier releases, On The Edge and Planet Drum which are a must for any fan of drumming/world music. On Supralingua, Hart introduces two new elements. The first is his pioneering use of MIDI technology to sample and blend live percussion sounds from across the world into the album--Hart directs the "endangered music" project at the Smithsonian in the US, through which he has access to a colossal range of such material. The other novelty is Hart's use of vocals on this album. Drawing from the ethnically diverse pool of local San Francisco talent, this adds a well-judged new dimension to the music. With few actual words sung, and none in English, they only add to the shifting weave of rhythms on display. This is an album of truly organic percussion music, dominated by magical and psychedelic grooves that are at the same time darkly forbidding, sexy and transformative. From the disturbing opening "Angola", featuring samples of the ritual singing of the Tibetan Gyoto Monks, to "Yabu's" insistent rhythms and the inspired dreaminess of "Endless River", this extraordinarily powerful album is unmissable. --James Swift

Strong & Vibrant Heart Beat of the Planet ... Nov 4 2003
By Erika Borsos TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Mickey Hart combines indigineous voices, chants, and traditional instruments with contemporary and shaminstic drumbeats to create a special CD very aptly named "Supralingua" ... which to me, means, super voices and super music. At times, add to this, the the sounds of nature ... for instance, drops of water or the ambience of the rainforest. Take the voices of the Gyuto Monks (Buddhist) mix them with the didjeridu, flutes, Chinese erhu, add a def drum beat, mixed in with metal percussion, cluster drums, and bongos ... all played by world-class musicians and you have an idea of track #1. This CD reveals a newly emerging creative path for music, showing us how traditional and contemporary instruments combine, to reveal an existence where the journey is never quite complete ... but is continually evolving. Listening to the CD is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Great Effort! Aug 13 2002

Format:Audio CD
Incorporating his computer operated drum machine "RAMU", Mickey sets the tone for another compelling album. Though not as awe-inspiring as his previous "instrumental" efforts, the album is still a sound to experience.

The album's tone is more upbeat, with a lot of percussion as well as (mentioned before), the RAMU (computer processed instruments such as vocals, roto toms, bells & whistles, etc.).

The songs are greatly constructed, but it is not a CD to chill out to. It is an album to groove and dance to. A little more latin-flavored too. Amazing stuff here.

So, if you're into a CD that has a little more meat in the sound, get it. If you're looking for a CD to take you on a journey, I recommend some of Mickey's previous efforts as well as Spirit Into Sound.

Enjoy!

hyperrhythmic electropulsing worldbeat sequel July 26 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album moves past the original Planet Drum territory, with some measure of success (most notably the fantastic kickoff track "Angola"), but with an overall sense of slight loss. Two factors keep it from reaching the level of the original PD album.

First, the music is literally bathed in electronics-- sorry to be a reactionary technophobe, but there is a real lack of that primal drum-circle feeling that makes the first PD disc an undeniable classic.

Second, key players such as Airto Moreira and Babatunde Olatunje make only token appearances at best; it's good to hear Zakir Hussain still there at the heart of things, but for the most part now it's mainly Mickey Hart's RAMU and some very good backing musicians. This is a quite listenable album (sounds _really_ good in the car), but it falls a notch short of true rhythmic greatness.

Agreed
I agree with "Pharoah". This is imminently good listening, but Hart trying to show off his RAMU often becomes a bit forced. Read more

You've never heard anything like Supralingua.

Rhythmically hypnotic.
Not a huge fan of either the Grateful Dead or electronic samples, I was a little bit apprehensive about buying this disc. However, once I actually listened to it, I was hooked. Read more

Polyrythmic groove...
Four stars because it's really good, not five because it' not earth-shattering or utterly incredible. All the best percussionists throughout the world get together and jam. Read more
