Book Description

The latest edition of this best-selling title is updated and expanded for easier use by engineers. New to this edition is a section on the fundamentals of surface production operations taking up topics from the oilfield as originally planned by the authors in the first edition. This information is necessary and endemic to production and process engineers. Now, the book offers a truly complete picture of surface production operations, from the production stage to the process stage with applications to process and production engineers.

· New in-depth coverage of hydrocarbon characteristics, the different kinds of reservoirs, and impurities in crude.
· Practical suggestions help readers understand the art and science of handling produced liquids.
· Numerous, easy-to-read figures, charts, tables, and photos clearly explain how to design, specify, and operate oilfield surface production facilities.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of errors, Mar 2 2011

This review is from: Surface Production Operations, Volume 1: Design of Oil Handling Systems and Facilities (Hardcover)
I'll start with the good. This book has some pretty good figures and schematics of different facilities and equipment. Thus I would recommend this book if you have never seen them before and wanted a visual.

And now the bad. I would not recommend this book as a classroom text. As a senior petroleum engineering student, I am currently enrolled in a class that uses this book. The reason this book is so distasteful is primarily because of the never ending typographical errors. Without exaggerating, I have found over 20 errors in the first few hundred pages. It almost seems as if this book was never edited. Although most of these errors can be recognized easily (such as wrong or missing subscripts), some errors are in the sample problems and can be much more difficult to detect (such as brackets or parentheses in the wrong place). If this was the first edition, I could understand a few errors here and there since I know not everything can be caught, but this is the THIRD edition! Based on my observations at this point, the authors, editor(s) and the publisher do not care about professionalism or accuracy. This book was probably made only to make money and not to teach the young professions or students wanting to learn on this subject.

Based on this, I wish I had never purchased this book and supported this type of "professionalism" (would have just used the library's copy). Everyone tells young engineers how important it is to make your work accurate and professional. Obvious the people involved in this book don't seem to care about either of these qualities.

(Also, the binding of the book is falling apart and I have only been using it for a couple months)

Final opinion - Don't waste your money on this book unless you want a headache.

This review is from: Surface Production Operations, Volume 1: Design of Oil Handling Systems and Facilities (Hardcover)
A fantastic reference book for anybody requiring a good knowledge petroleum production. Details all of the equipment commonly encountered in a production facility along with situations in which each different vessel should be selected and optimum operating conditions.
