Review

"Given how compulsively readable most of Osprey's adult-level books have always been, it's gratifying to see the publisher putting all that expertise to very good use in these "PG-13" volumes. Right off the bat, so to speak, I was deeply impressed with how author Hama has managed to summarive ALL of the Civil War's basic causes within the boundaries of 600 words... ultra-tight prose is not necessarily lacking in grace!" -Mike Dorn, The Wargamer

Product Description

The first major Civil War battle in the Western theater, Shiloh came as a horrifying shock to both the American public and those in arms. On April 6, 1862, Confederate forces staged a surprise attack on the Union army encamped along the Tennessee River. Fighting was fierce as General Grant struggled to hold off the enemy until his reinforcements arrived the following day so that he could 'Whip 'em tomorrow'. Though nearly driven into the Tennessee River, the Union army could ultimately claim victory - won at a dear cost. With nearly 24,000 total casualties in two days' fighting, 'Bloody Shiloh' served as a wake-up call to the nation, announcing that the continuing fight for the Union would be devastating for both sides.
Surprise Attack! brings to life one of the Civil War's bloodiest battles in highly accessible graphic novel format. It also includes eight pages of authoritative background information placing Shiloh in its historical context, detailing the key players, and describing the build-up to the fighting and its aftermath.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grab the Young Reader!, Nov 11 2010
By Shirley A. Renaud "Shirley Renaud" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Surprise Attack!: Battle of Shiloh (Paperback)
From cover to cover Surprise Attack/Battle of Shiloh had the attention of my two grandsons! A history book that holds the attention of an eight year old AND a four year old - truly amazing!
Realistic dipictions of Confederate and Union soldiers with bayonets, muzzle loaders, horses, and cannons are incorporated with the clear text in a "comic book-like" setting making this an unintimidating book for an early reader. A few pages for the more advanced reader begins and completes the book with consise introductory and general information concerning the Civil War. Important historical characters as well as political and economic conditions leading up the war are discussed. A simple map identifies the area in which this battle took place. Nearly forty pages of pleasantly colord "comic" pages make up the majority of the book. Each of these pages depict battle scenes as well as scenes described within the very clearly written text. The pictures grab the reader's attention and the information is explained in elementary vocabulary. Illustrations include very specific detail right down to the expressions on the soldiers'faces.
My grandsons reach for this book to take in the car, to look at and to be read to! What a great break
for them from my granddaughters' "princess" books.
