At best, the word surrender is decidedly un-American Remember the Alamo, Leave it all on the field, Never give up. But Scripture and Father Larry Richards can be equally as compelling as he challenges you to go against the grain and do what few are willing to do. A gifted and captivating speaker, preacher, and retreat master... inner city pastor Father Richard's infectious enthusiasm, in-your-face realism and solid teaching will help you see how surrendering to the will of God paves the way to obtaining the peace which surpasses all understanding, that will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (see Phil 4:7). Following in the footsteps of his best-selling "Be a Man" book, Surrender outlines concrete steps you can take to dwell in peace. Simply put, God wants every one of us to be a saint which is a lot of work! It requires developing a plan for your life, in accordance with the Lord's will. Prayer is the key to this, as it opens the soul to hearing God's voice and accepting his guidance. But prayer too requires discipline and planning. Father Richards is the life coach every one of us needs on the sidelines of our daily life the tough love coach who calls it like he sees it. Allow yourself to move out of the driver seat and surrender to the one who knows all God. Table of Contents: Preface Surrender and Go to Heaven! Surrender and Be a Great Lover! Surrender and Be Free! There is so much useful information packed in this book of 155 pages. Fr. Larry pulls no punches and takes no prisoners. I highly recommend this book!
His catchy little remiders, "no bible no breakfast no bible no bed", or "don't let your feet hit the floor until your knees hit the floor" will ring in your head throughout the day. His style is direct and to the point. It also is funny, thought provoking and extremely challenging.

steps of your mind, knocking on your soul--he wants to tell you about
surrendering to God, and he explains how. After you've read his book
up to the passage that starts at the middle of page 35, if you have grown-
up kids you'll probably have tears in your eyes; I did--not from feeling
bad but from understanding. Keep reading; maybe you'll have more
tears but you'll laugh, too, and you'll love it. When you get to page 114,
take your pen and circle the middle paragraph starting with, "Take five

If you are not familiar with Fr. Larry's approach, you will find this book to be honest and refreshing, thought provoking and entertaining. He's from Pittsburgh after all! He tells it like it is and uses real world examples from his life and ministry. He is not one of those holier than thou sorts of priests, and reveals his human weaknesses in the book to assure the reader that we all must strive for holiness and to surrender to God's will more and more each day.
While the book is easy to read, it also has depth. I'm about halfway through now and probably need to stop at this point (where God hit me in the head with a 2x4) to reflect more on the need to forgive myself and those who have hurt me.
As the back cover asks, "What is it in your life that you hold on to so tightly that you can't surrender in order to receive everything God wants to give you?" We're all holding on to something that we should really let go. If you hands and your heart are already FULL, you don't have any capacity to receive the abundant grace God longs to give you!
Buy two copies of this book. . . one for yourself and one for someone you love enough that you want them to understand the truth about what it means to live as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Fr. Richards' newest book, Surrender! The Life Changing Power of Doing God's Will (Our Sunday Visitor, paperback, 155 pages), packs a similar punch. In the book, Fr. Richards explains that the first step to discovering God's will is obvious: converse with Him daily through prayer and ask Him what He wants. But after we discover God's will, which in many cases is the easy part, we're faced with the difficult question of whether we surrender to it or not.
"It's as simple as that," says Fr. Richards. "Are we going to do God's will, even if we don't want to? That's the real question, isn't it? It goes beyond knowing what God wants us to do--to being willing to carry through and do it."
Reading Surrender! is like having a wise spiritual director walk you through one of Christianity's murkiest questions: "what is God's will for my life?" Fr. Richards provides sharp advice to help cut through our paralyzing fears and stubborn self-wills, the resistances we build to carrying out God's plan. Surrender! would be an especially good book for young Christians who are discerning their path in life, but all can benefit from Fr. Richards' powerful advice.
