After receiving the regular version of Survive, I ordered this one and thought it would contain more information that was different from the original. I was wrong. The Ultimate edition has a different cover, color photographs and that was it. The other extra was the dvd of the "pilot" episodes of SurvivorMan, but these lacked the post production of the regular series and seemed more like a home movie than a professionally filmed and edited show. If you have the regular edition of Survive, I do not recommend this one unless you want colored pictures and the 2 episode dvd. Do not get me wrong, I love the show and the book is excellent, there is just too much duplication.

I had not read Stroud's previous book and choose this one for the DVD. I found the DVD interesting but not as polished as the TV show. The book has lots of excellent information that is of use even if not stranded somewhere. Any one who camps or spends time in the "wilds" would benifit from the book. Of particular value is his suggestions for the "survival kit" to keep with you at all times. I used to like watching Bear Grylls on "Man vs Wild", but since I started watching "Survivorman" "Man vs Wild" sets my teeth on edge it is so fake in comparison. Stroud makes survival a reality showing just how challenging it is.
