Review

Praise for previous editions of Surviving Your Divorce

"In an eminently readable way, Cochrane tackles and demystifies topics ranging from the emotional stages of marriage breakdown and domestic violence to hiring and firing lawyers, the family-law court system, division of family property, support, custody and access, common-law spouses and alternatives to the courtroom....The book is not intended to convince you to go it alone, without a lawyer; it’s designed, rather, to help you know what to expect when you do go. This is a book full of common-sense advice delivered in plain talk."
—Susan Schwartz, Montreal Gazette

"This readable, informative book is packed with all the information necessary to make informed decisions about marriage and divorce agreements. Cochrane has taken pains to descibe just about every legal pitfall and divorce experience imaginable, and in great detail....And just to make it easier, he includes samples of legal agreements, budgets, petitions, financial statements, forms and contracts necessary for just about every permutation or combination in a settlement--and a glossary of associated legal terms."
—Sharon Adams, Calgary Herald

4.0 out of 5 stars a helpful book., July 17 2010

This review is from: Surviving Your Divorce: A Guide to Canadian Family Law (Paperback)
Starting off the book was the very helpful analogy of divorce with terminal illness, and the similarities between the emotional reactions of people going through either. It helped put a better perspective on reactions of both of us through our separation.

At a point when emotions and chaos was flying it was good to get a basic understanding of the legal and financial implications of divorce and the legal process.

As somebody from Ontario, Canada, I also found the very Ontario specific bias of this book helpful. Also helpful was that this book was also not out of date. Reading a book 10 years old written in the USA, there is a lot that is guessed to be irrelevant, and this book didn't require so much care to read in case of inapplicability.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I had hoped..., May 20 2012

I was hoping (and expected from the overview) that this book would be more than just a broad overview of the system in Canada. That said, there were several very good pointers in the book; I don't know that it was worth the Kindle price, much less the bound price. Read this if you know absolutely nothing about the system in Canada to gain an entry level understanding of the mechanics of divorce in Canada. NOTE TO RESIDENTS OF BC: There were a several references to Ontario and other eastern provinces but I didn't find anything specifically relating to BC; BUT I didn't read the whole book since I don't have children and I'm not concerned with those issues.
