4.0 out of 5 stars Two Lonely souls find each other in a most unexpected way, Dec 29 2010

Susan Macias's novel Sweet Escape is a good romantic read because this author shows the reader the protagonists falling in love. Through words and actions the reader understands how a sheltered woman could be enamored with the man who has kidnapped her.

Maggie Bishop is alone in the world. She wants a new life, one far away from her step father so she joins a wagon train headed to California. She plans to go to at least as far as St. Louis and there gather more supplies for her journey. She is the last wagon in the train so it is fairly easy to understand why her wagon was picked as a good hiding place for Colter James.

Maggie is stunned and scared when Colter draws a gun on her and demands she leave the train and take him into the wilderness area. Surrounded by woods she initially fears for her life.

Colter is no ordinary criminal he is in fact a wronged man who was accused of murder when he was a soldier fighting in the Civil War. He wants to clear his name and needs to find a fellow soldier in Chicago who he believes can clear him of the murder charges. Colter has a couple of lying bounty hunters/former soldiers dogging him and he needs Maggie and her wagon as a means of escape.

These two of course spend much time together and as they converse both discover that they are both lonely individuals who just want a new start in life. Colter is an honorable but hardened man and he despises the fact that he had to frighten Maggie upon their first meeting. The couple develop a trust between each other and Colter is particularly worried about Maggie's safety. What if the amoral men searching for him hurt Maggie? His mission takes on an even greater urgency.

I liked this novel from its opening chapters. Maggie is a gentle but determined young woman. She bravely takes charge of her own destiny whether it's joining a wagon train or standing by Colter's side.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books ever, May 20 2011

The title of this review says it all. I loved the story and setting. The hero and heroine are wonderful. At first, they are opposites, don't fit together at all. By the end, the talented Ms. Macias shows us they are perfect for each other. The historical detials are very well done. A winner!
