--Helen Faradji

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Film, Feb 6 2003
This review is from: Sweet Home Alabama (DVD)
Who doesn't like Reese Witherspoon? She shines in anything she's in, because she seems like such a sweet, down-to-earth kind of gal. With that said, it is hard to say anything too bad about one of her movies. Like 'Legally Blonde', 'Sweet Home Alabama' is nothing special - a romantic comedy whose romance is fairly predictable, and whose comedy is smile-inducing at best, but never really laugh-out-loud funny. However, that does not mean it is a bad movie. In fact, it is quite charming.

Reese plays Melanie Carmichael, an up-and-coming fashion designer who has just been given the marriage purposal of a lifetime by her boyfriend, who is the son of the Mayor of New York City, played by Candice Bergen. In order to marry him, though, she must travel home to Alabama to ask her husband Jake, whom she left 7 years ago, for a divorce. He, of course, keeps putting off signing the divorce papers because we can all see he is still in love with her. Is she still in love with him? Or does she want to leave her past in the past, and move on to bigger and better things? What follows is your average romance story, with no twists or turns, but you're interested in seeing how exactly everything will turn out and when.

The performances are good - newcomer Josh Lucas is great as Jake, and I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of him in the future. Reese delivers a great performance, as usual, although I don't think her performance here is as good as her performance in 'Legally Blonde'. And the entire supporting cast does a fine job as well (Candice Bergen is always great at playing snobby, cranky characters). All in all it's a fun film, and the romance, though a tad unoriginal, does not disappoint. And I would also like to say how happy I was that they didn't make Melanie's fiance a bad guy. In most love-triangle movies ('The Wedding Singer' comes to mind), the filmmakers make the fiance out to be a cheating jerk, and we have to wait for her to realize it and choose the right guy. Here in 'Alabama', she has a real decision to make, and it's not an easy one! (Hmm...rich guy who lets me pick out any engagement ring I want at Tiffany's, or my first love...?) So it gets a point there for not following the average romantic comedy formula.

If you're looking for something light, and something a little romantic (especially for Valentine's Day) see this movie if you haven't already. And girls, make your boyfriends watch the proposal scene for pointers!

5.0 out of 5 stars An adorable film., April 8 2011
This review is from: Sweet Home Alabama (DVD)
Yes, this is a chick flick, and an excellent one at that. Reese Witherspoon plays the New York socialite returning to her southern roots. This is a story of finding who you are, while remembering where you come from. The film is predictable at times, but still heartwarmingly adorable. Though Reese is clearly the star, the entire cast makes the movie worth watching. I love this film, and it's one of the few that I can watch over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Torn Between Two Worlds, Jan 26 2009

This review is from: Sweet Home Alabama (DVD)
"Home Sweet Alabama" is a combination of humor and serious drama. Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is young woman who left her past behind to pursue her career as a clothing designer in New York. Just when she is at the top of her game and is engaged to Andrew Hemings (Patrick Depsey), the son of the mayor of New York (Candice Bergen), things start to unravel. Returning to her redneck husband she finds that he is not quite ready to finalize their divorce. Amidst all of the comedy, Melanie gradually finds herself as she tries to complete the transition from the world she was born into to the woman she has created. While watching the film one enjoys following the self realization which gradually turns Melanie into her true self.
I won't say more because I do not want to ruin it for you, but on two levels, this is a most entertaining movie. Don't miss it.
