Book Description

Jun 1 2009 1855756455 978-1855756458
In this volume the author proposes that it is the interplay of love and loss that lies at the epicentre of the human story. Support for this proposal is taken from neuroscience, art and psychoanalysis. It will also introduce the reader to important ideas and findings from Attachment Theory. An exploration of the relationship between love and loss can lead us to some understanding of the meaning of our lives. It shows how love and loss are inextricably bound at the centre of human experience, and form the essential dynamic of the human struggle.

This book will appeal to sophisticated lay readers, in addition to various categories of student and professional audiences. It will be of interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, philosophers, neuroscientists and sociologists. Readers with a background mainly in the arts and humanities will find it appealing because of its linkages and use of poetry, song and visual art to elucidate and illustrate the major propositions of the book.

More generally, anyone with a curiosity about love and loss will find this book attractive. It provides insight and illumination to many of the human circumstances that people encounter in their day-to-day lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr Eppel is to be congratulated! Sep 5 2009
Format:Paperback
Dr Eppel's beautifully written book is at the same time scholarly and yet compelling for a general audience. It is a rare gift to be able to assimilate the intricate theories that have been advanced to explain the complexities lying behind our deepest emotions, translate this synopsis into language that is accessible and understandable, and set this down gracefully on the printed page. Readers are fortunate that Dr Eppel has this talent. Oprah take notice!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perspective Changing Read Mar 2 2011
By REM
Format:Paperback
Sweet Sorrow provides an intelligent and in depth analysis of the relationship between love and loss. Dr. Eppel artfully weaves popular culture, philosophy, and art together with psychological theory and research to appproach the subject from multiple angles. One of the most important ideas is the view of love transcending space and time so that it goes on eternally, even after death. This book will give meaning to those who are trying to cope with a significant loss and provide a framework for understanding their own personal experience of grief.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Layman's Perspective Mar 20 2011
Format:Paperback
Dr. Alan Eppel, digs deep into the love and loss relationship and how these inately human experiences are tied to our early human attachments. In eleven, clearly stated and defined, propositions, he opens our minds to the motivation to live through lost loves. Dr. Eppel achieves this, by having the reader look honestly at how their birth attachments affect their future reactions to love and loss. Sweet Sorrow is a compelling writing, combining psychiatric theory and psychoanalysis with the beauty of art, poetry and philosphy.

As a 37 year Consumer of Mental Health, diagnosed with Bi-Polar II Disorder, I felt, saw and experienced, the tapestry of my own life unravel as I turned each page. Dr. Eppel's writing opened my eyes to my own early attachment challenges with my Mother and the attachment to me, experienced by my three daughters. My own, early attachment, was to a Mother who dealt with Unipolar Disorder. Alan Eppel's, Sweet Sorrow, has given me a deeper understanding of my reactions to love and loss and to the equally challanging effort of my daughters to attach to me and the consequent attachments they forge with others. His book helped me understand how fragmented relationships with our early attachments, build the foundation for difficulty in healthy attachments later in our lives.

It was unsurprising to me how, concisely and compassionately, Dr. Eppel's wisdom was reflected on each page, since he is my Psychiatrist. A beautiful read for the layman, student or colleague. Sweet Sorrow: Love, Loss and Attachment in Human Life
