3.0 out of 5 stars Not Typical Quality Jan. 7 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was not up to the high standard of reading I'm used to with Elizabeth Lowell. I usually find myself highly enjoying any book with her name on the cover.
However, mayhap it was the premise of the book that disturbed me more than the actual writing. The hero and heroine of this novel had grown up as as basically half sister/brother to one another. To me, the idea of romance between the two almost rings of an incestual note even though there was no blood relation between them. Her father, unable to acknowledge her since she was illegitmate, and finding his wife unable to bear children adopted him.
When he passed away, his dying wish was for her to inherit the family land and home. He knows this and decides to try and win her heart in order to keep his home. These two have a history of love failing between them, as once before he hurt her deeply. With these premises in mind, I did not care for eithier of these characters..so much so that i'm afraid to tell their names for fear I've already forgotten them they were that forgettable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay April 17 2009

I've really enjoyed Ms Lowell's writing, but this book, although it had some very romantic scenes in it, left me wanting more. More plot, more mystery, anything really other than the romance. I don't regret buying it and I'll probably keep it in my library or give away, but I probably won't find myself rereading it because it was a little too plain for me. Quick and easy read, but a little disappointing in regards to Ms Lowell's capability. On to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down! Oct. 7 1998

I loved this book! I couldn't help but get involved in the characters whose past memories threaten to keep them from what love can offer. Carson was so patient and sensitive with Lara, giving totally of himself in an unselfish way. I thought it had a good story and great sexual tension. It's definitely one I will keep in my collection.

I was somewhat disappointed in this book,it was not near the standard I usually read of hers.. It seem to ramble on and on. I found it difficult to stay with.. I hope I can find some better books of hers in the future...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not horribe... Aug. 25 2013

I love second chance love stories...just not this one. The reason I did not enjoy this one was because there was so much reasoning among the book instead of allowing the reader to reach their own conclusion by the characters words and actions. I felt as though the author was explaining the story more than actually developing it. It stopped short of saying: "The H betrayed the h but we are going to overlook how much he should actually be apologizing and we are also going to overlook his lies of omission because even though his actions are really bad, he really isn't THAT bad of a guy....get it?" The author never has the H make amends for his lies and betrayal. The H does in fact apologize for hurting the h at the start yet he does this knowing that he is still using the h. How can the readers go from such a deep betrayal to fast forward two weeks later on the next page when all is forgiven after one conversation and a swim to them getting married the next chapter. I felt I was reading a summary of a good story instead of the actual story. ***Some Spoilers*** Instead of the author telling us that all was well, I would rather had seen an attempt to win the h trust again. I needed actions and words to see trust build in the relationship, I did not need the arguments in the h's head to rationalized that the H didn't need to make amends for all of his transgressions and somehow twist everything around for the h apologizing to him. This HEA leaves readers with the feeling that whatever the H does, the h will rationalize it in her head as somehow not that bad or her fault, just like the end. After the h finds out about the H last betrayal (and it is huge) she goes for a walk and by the time she returns home she has completely forgotten of the H betrayal and somehow ends up being the one apologizing. I loath weak h so that might also be clouding my judgment of the book but for whatever reason you choose, I did not enjoy it.

Great read. It takes the reader inside the old west ranch life, the hardships, and the choices made to survive and keep the ranch going. These choices are still being felt in the present day where the story takes place.
