Product Description

Colored leaves, red, yellow, and brown, fluttered past George as he rode behind Woonsak in the long string of Indians and ponies. They were riding north and moving quickly. So many Indians moved along the path that George, who rode near the front of the line, could not see the end when he turned around to look. The farther they went, the more unhappy George became. For with every step, Neko (his faithful pony)took him farther and farther from his home and from Ma and Pa. Even the fluttering leaves seemed like little hands waving good-bye all the day long. So begins chapter seven of this beloved classic by Josephine Cunnington Edwards. George, a young pioneer boy is captured by Indians and raised as the son of a mighty chief. He spends his time learning the ways of these native Americans, and yearning for the day that he might find a way to return to his loving family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Adventure, July 22 2009
This review is from: Swift Arrow (Paperback)
I read this book when I was a kid and absolutely loved it. It was one of those stories I read over and over again. The story is about a white boy who is kidnapped by Indians. His skin is dyed regularly with some kind of berry juice to make him fit in, and he becomes the chief's son. When he is older he makes his escape back home. Wonderful, adventurous story for a kid to read.

I imagine I'd look at it differently through the lense of the 21st century...probably what I read in the 70's would be considered politically incorrect today!

4.0 out of 5 stars The same, and not the same., Nov 9 2006
By Lightfoot fan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Swift Arrow (Paperback)
I remember this book from my childhood 40-some years ago. Though the text is the same, it's not the original publisher. The book is put together more cheaply in this edition; past the cover, it just has a cheesy look to it. I realize that I'm making a subjective statement, and a relative one as well, but overall the book just doesn't have the quality to it that I hoped it would have. Thank goodness the story is still as good as it always was!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for grades 1st-3rd, Sep 23 2004
By M. Carey "Matty's Mom" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Swift Arrow (Paperback)
This captivating story has never left my memory for 30 years! It was a favorite "read aloud" at the Christian school I attended and I enjoyed hearing it again and again. Now that I am a 3rd grade teacher, I too will read it aloud to my children! It also falls into meeting Social Studies California State standards with regards to learning more about the American Indians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Captivating!, July 9 2002
By Warren Manyara - Published on Amazon.com

You want a fascinating adventure? This is it. What makes it even better is that it's a true story. Read the book about ten years back yet lots of books later, it still stands as one of my very favorites.
