Historically relevant,
By Steven Barnaby (Plymouth, Michigan USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swing Kids (DVD)
This is a movie that is relevant on at least two levels. It is an important historical lesson in how the Nazi's overwhelmed a segment of German society through innuendo and deceit. Especially important in the role of the Gestapo official. In traditional movies Gestapo officials are stereotypically mean and absurd. In Swing Boys the role is much more realistic and devious. He is a friendly, smiling character who gradually pulls the noose tighter until there is no escaping the Nazi death grip. The movie demonstrates how the "normal" people of society are lured into the anti-social behavior of a regime gone mad. This is an important movie because it's message is timeless, a real lesson in why if we don't learn from history, it is bound to repeat itself. On other notes, the music and dancing are great and offer a nice contrast to the sterility of an unbending political dogma.

I first saw this movie when I was around 16ish. I rented it because Christian Bale was in it. Anyhow I loved this movie sooo much. It was sad and the music in it was amazing. It inspired me to pick up swing dancing. The soundtrack is excellent too. I own it and if you don't have it you should really really buy it.

A different perspective,
By Dee "Dee" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swing Kids (VHS Tape)
This isn't just about music. This film is rooted in the truth of how nazi propaganda (or any propaganda for that matter) can ultimatley brain wash a person, let alone a nation! and destroy true friendship, family,& lives. The youth who stay devoted to their love for swing also stay devoted to each other and refuse to conform to a cult of hatred. In staying dedicated to the scene of swing and buying the music, those youth make a statement that they choose not to be racist (as many of the records were recorded by diverse ethnicities) or to voluntarily take part in the nazi movement. It shows how damaging it can be when a young person gets caught up in feeling like they belong or finally "fit in" to a group, but that group is corrupt and leads them to destuction and a demeanor of malice. I think it is a very powerful film and it touches on quite a few different facets. I especially like this film because it shows a different perspective by zeroing in on only a handful of lives that were affected by that time and so it makes me ponder what must have been going on for others in their struggle to survive that regretable era.
