Claire Daly is telling a story...,
By
This review is from: Swing Low (Audio CD)
Thank god some jazz musicians have not forgot about soul andnote choice.Ms Daly is one of them. If you like your jazz warm, swinging and now...then here is a nod to the past but also looking at the future. Shes got the roots..but also has the now. I adore her SOUND. She sounds like she knows where shes going in every solo and has a story to tell. Also, she leads the band well from the baritone to. I never heard Claire Daly not swing or play something that moved me.This is some classy music done by a classy person. REAL JAZZ....I can hear a person in her sound.YEA CLAIRE!

It swings,

(Not everybody can be a Gerry Mulligan, Serge Chaloff, Lars Gullin (Sweden), Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber (despite his sound), Nick Brignola or John Pål Inderberg (Norway). These are some truly great baritone players from around the world, alive or deceased.) This is just above mediocre. Something borrowed, something blue, nothing new. But it swings. The band is good. Garzone is great, as a couple of other reviewers have remarked. I'm sorry, Daly, you don't quite do it for me. Not yet, anyhow. I'm a listener who loves changing my opinion, and with so few good baritone players around, I will be watching your next move!

Not bad at all,

I bought this record ... after reading a couple of articles on Daly in Down Beat and some other magazine, where she was hyped to a certain extent. My expectations were raised, as I am a true fan of the baritone sax. Though she's not the next Mulligan or Chaloff, Daly is not at all a bad player. She finds her way from A to B, swinging easily. This is not jazz in an exploratory sense, but it works. Good, old standards, played in a good, old-fashioned way. This is not the kind of music happening in the now, but somebody's got to take care of the old stuff, too. However, with the addition of George Garzone, New York/Boston tenor great, and a friend of Daly's, it seems, the album gets its dose of contemporary. Garzone plays with utter vigour and humour on two of the tracks. Once the pitch issue is solved (too many notes are too much off key), I guess Daly's arrived where she wants to be, in the middle of the mainstream, playing old-school tunes with nice solos to go.
