Product Description

“Vampire and werewolf lovers beware; this trilogy opener offers readers a new take on an unexpected breed of mystical beings. Readers who can suspend preconceived notions and open themselves up to this new interpretation are in for a midwinter version of a good beach read.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“This is The Princess Diaries meets Twilight, and Hocking hits all the commercial high notes…Switched is escapist fantasy; it isn't the specificity of the world that matters here; it's the accessibility…What teenager hasn't felt like a freak, a changeling in his or her own family? Who doesn't fantasize about being transformed from ordinary to extraordinary, of being whisked way to another life where the very things that are irritants in the "regular world" turn out to reveal our specialness?” ―New York Times Book Review

“Wendy is a flawed antihero, which helps differentiate her from the throng of paranormal-romance heroines, and the potential for development, both dramatic and romantic, should make readers anxious for the next installment of the Trylle trilogy.” ―Booklist

“Switched is written so wonderfully that it' is not hard to imagine you are in this fantastic world! Readers will love the exhilarating roller-coaster ride of Wendy's life as she adapts to…a frightening and exciting life.” ―Romantic Times BOOKreviews

“You can't beat the storyline for Switched, the book that starts off the series with a bang: When Wendy Everly was a little girl, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to end her life. Now Wendy is starting to wonder whether there might have been something to her mom's paranoia after all. Enter Finn Holmes―the mysterious, sexy guardian who's been watching over Wendy until she was old enough to learn the truth about her supernatural origins―and the revelation of a hidden world full of mysteries, dangers, and untapped powers that Wendy never knew she had.” ―MTV.com

“The romance is smoldering, the action is suspenseful, and the characters are quirky, likeable, and original. Amanda Hocking has a gift for storytelling that will grip readers and keep them wanting more…Entrancing.” ―Library Thing

“Started Switched last night. I don't like this book because it made me stay up too late last night to keep reading and made me skip my dance class this morning so I can finish it!” ―BookCrossing

“I started reading Switched in the evening one night and stayed up until 3 a.m. because I didn't want to put it down. I had to be at work the next day and all I could think about was going home and finishing the book. Yes, it's THAT good.” ―A Tale of Many Reviews

Switched is paranormal YA with a fresh twist. It has a more deliberate pace than other YA fantasy...and more emotional thrills. I really appreciated the realistic development of the love story, and the characters feel well developed. Recommended.” ―I'd So Rather Be Reading

“I ate this book up I could barely put it down before bed, and was also trying to sneak time in my busy morning to read some extra sentences. This was an awesome first book in a series that I'm dying to read. Amanda please write the next one soon. I'm dying!!” ―Midnight Glace Reviews

“I LOVED this book! The characters are quite likable…and there is never a dull moment. I highly suggest you take a look at this book if you want to read some fantasy that leaves you panting for the next installment.” ―The Light Under The Covers

“Filled with action, suspense, and romance...I found the story completely fascinating.” ―A True Reality Blog

“Amanda Hocking is like a breath of fresh air in the young adult paranormal market. I've read countless books about vampires, werewolves and faeries, but never one about trolls…Switched was an impressive start to a series that was chock-full of excitement, adventure and attitude.” ―That Bookish Girl Blog

Switched has more intrigue and hidden secrets than the average YA book.” ―Read My Mind

“An addicting, easy to digest book that can be devoured in an afternoon.” ―Feeding My Book Addiction

“I absolutely loooooveeed Switched. From the first pages I found myself totally caught up stealing moments to read this book. Visually I 'saw' this book so well in my head. Just an awesome read that makes you feel for the characters.” ―Novels On The Run Reviews

I was curious to see how this book would turn out. Trolls were a new one for me. I've also heard many good things about author Amanda Hocking - so when I started the book I was expecting it to be good and at first I was disappointed.

In the first few chapters I thought Wendy came off as nothing but a brat really and the story was a bit bland but after about three chapters it became more interesting and I got caught up in the story. My earlier impressions of Wendy were misplaced and she grew to be a more lovable character but at times I still felt she was causing unnecessary pain to her brother and aunt.

Still, as I said the story caught me and I was brimming with questions and excitement as I read about the troll society. The story was well done and it didn't feel slow like it did in the beginning but rather every chapter was thrilling to read about. I really enjoyed meeting the characters and seeing how they interact. Finn, Willa, and Tove grew on me even the cold Elora.

The abilities of the Trylle (trolls) were interesting and I wished we could have learned more about Wendy's powers but I suppose that's another thing to look forward to in the next book. I also wanted to learn more about the kingdom of the Trylle, what's threatening it and it's politics (never thought I'd be saying that!). The new re-published St. Martin's edition also had a short story that's never been published called 'The Vittra Attacks' set within the world. I'm wondering how the characters that I saw in them will play a role in the next book. It was four chapters long and interesting to read.

I believe the many great things said about Hocking's stories are well deserved.

I'm a big fan of Amanda Hocking – not because of her self-made status, but because of her writing style and how she steps out of the paranormal genre to include more than just vampires and fairies. This series in particular focuses on anthropomorphic trolls who still practice placing a changeling troll with human parents.
While some reviewers may think that our protagonist, Wendy, is just a spoiled teenager, I feel that Hocking is actually trying to show us how Trylle (or trolls) are different from their human counterparts, right down to their general demeanor. They like going barefoot, are picky eaters, and are generally pretty grumpy. They're trolls, right?
I found this first addition to the trilogy to be fairly well laid out – very much following Joseph Campbells Heroes Journey – however, it didn't feel as fleshed out as it could have. Some aspects definitely feel a bit too quick, not leaving enough room to fully develop the story. Despite this, I still quite enjoyed the book.
We are taken into a world of the supernatural – a completely fascinating one. Hocking will hint at little things, but doesn't reveal anything too soon – the mystery drives the story forwards.
Altogether, this book left me wanting more – lucky for me, I've got the next two books on the shelf ready to go.

If you're looking for something supernatural that's got a bit more imagination – check out Hockings Switched. There's no glittery fairy's here.

SWITCHED (Trylle Series #1) by Amanda Hocking

SWITCHED is the first novel in Amanda Hocking's Young Adult Trylle series. Originally self-published, the Trylle trilogy has put Amanda Hocking of the best-seller's lists. I am not quite sure of the genre, but I would place it in a combination of fantasy and a little urban fantasy-but very little. Although the heroine is not out to save the world, she must save the Trylle.

17 year old Wendy Everly has always felt unloved and unwanted: that she didn't belong. It doesn't' help that her mother tried to kill her on her 6th birthday or that through most of her early childhood she was told that she was switched at birth and killed her own brother. And with her ability to 'persuade' others, she knew that somehow she was different. But discovering you WERE switched at birth, puts a whole new perspective on her mother's delirium and accusations. Wendy is not human-she is a Trylle.

As a tracker and protector, it is Finn Holmes' duty to find the missing changelings-those children switched at birth with a human infant-a mansklig. And finding Wendy is easy. As the daughter of the Trylle Queen, Wendy must return to Forening and take her position in the hierarchy of the monarchy of the Trolls-yes-the Trylle are a tribe in the supernatural world of Trolls. Not the Brothers' Grimm ugly old troll who lived under the bridge, but a race/a being of beauty gifted with special abilities and powers. But there is another tribe on the hunt for Wendy, and the Vittra did not want Wendy to ascend to the throne-it is her powers that they required.

Meeting her birth mother for the first time, Wendy is shocked to learn Elora is the Queen.

When I first read the synopsis for this book, I thought it was going to be just another story about faery changelings -- but it surprised me in the best possible way! Switched was still mystically beautiful in a way that was reminiscent of faeries, but it was about spellbinding trolls instead.

These are not the wild, erratic, and live-under-a-bridge trolls you're used to -- instead, they're called Trylle and they're beautiful, magical, and so incredibly fascinating! I was captivated by the Trylle lore immediately, from their abilities to their monarchy and way of life.

I adore Wendy. She's the perfect strong yet vulnerable, hard-willed yet completely sweet heroine that makes it so easy to connect with a book. She's far from perfect, but her imperfections are what make her real. The rest of the cast (like Rhys, and Willa, and even Queen Elora) each have their own distinct personalities that make it interesting too!

And Finn? There's just something about those "strong and silent" types that draws girls in -- I loved him so much! Tentative and sweet, their romance was one that I fell in love with the more I read. Between the fast-paced plot, unique lore, and beautiful setting, you will fly through this book in one sitting and find yourself spellbound in Amanda Hocking's world!

Fascinating and beautiful, Switched is one refreshing story that's definitely worth the read! I can't believe it took me so long to pick it up but I'm SO glad I did. Now I'm desperately craving to find out what happens in the second book of the trilogy, Torn! :)
