Product Description

More amazing than any work of fiction, yet true in every word, it swept to the top of the bestseller lists and riveted the consciousness of the world. As an Emmy Award-winning film starring Sally Field, it captured the home screens of an entire nation and has endured as the most electrifying TV movie ever made. It's the story of a survivor of terrifying childhood abuse, victim of sudden and mystifying blackouts, and the first case of multiple personality ever to be psychoanalyzed.

You're about to meet Sybil-and the sixteen selves to whom she played host, both women and men, each with a different personality, speech pattern, and even personal appearance. You'll experience the strangeness and fascination of one woman's rare affliction-and travel with her on her long, ultimately triumphant journey back to wholeness.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Horrifying and brilliant!!, Mars 23 2007
This review is from: Sybil (Mass Market Paperback)
What would it be like to be sixteen different people and not know you were? How would you feel if you were in one place then in another a second later, but realized a week went by? In the book Sybil, a young woman has to deal with this disease of having sixteen personalities and doesn't realize this. A phychiatrist learns what caused the personalities to come out and develops relationships with each one. Flora Rheta Schreiber makes you feel like you are actually there and uses a lot of detail. SYBIL is one of the best books I have ever read. Follow the journey of Sybil on the road to become one person again. Must also recommend a book titled BARK OF THE DOGWOOD. Great books!!!!!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Horrifying and fascinating all at once, Avril 13 2005
This review is from: Sybil (Mass Market Paperback)
So many books deal with mental illness or hardships nowadays. McCrae's THE CHILDREN'S CORNER comes to mind, as does A CHILD CALLED IT. But the one that still stands as the ultimate is SYBIL. The story of Sybil is an incredible testimony to the inner strength that humans possess. An only child, Sybil was horribly abused and traumatized by her diagnosed schizophrenic mother as an infant and child, and her father, not accepting his wife's diagnosis, was in denial. Although many in the community sensed there was something amiss in the Dorset household, no one could rescue Sybil, but Sybil herself. By splintering her psyche into 16 different Personalities, Sybil "escaped" the torment and survived. And, this oppressed but brilliant, gifted individual managed to nurture her extraordinary talent and worked hard to make her dreams of becoming an artist come true. SYBIL is the best true story I've ever read and re-read - at least 5 times, maybe more. I always wonder where she is now, and if she ever married. My sincere wish for Sybil is that she has peace of mind and a happy life.

5.0étoiles sur 5 It's not about the button hooks, Aoû 12 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Sybil (Mass Market Paperback)
This book simply took my breath away. I actually saw the movie first and then read the book--both are great. The only other book that's more disturbing than SYBIL (if you can believe there's something worse than this) is THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD. The difference is that the latter is sometimes very funny also. But SYBIL remains a classic and is probably THE tale of multiple personality disorder.
