About the Author

Syd Mead (b. 1933 in St. Paul, Minnesota) is a widely celebrated industrial designer, illustrator and "visual futurist," known as the designer of cityscapes and vehicles for motion pictures, including Blade Runner, Tron, Star Trek - The Motion Picture and Mission to Mars. After graduation from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Mead worked briefly as an auto stylist for Ford Motor Company. For US Steel, he designed and illustrated books that envision the use of steel in future societies. In addition to his legendary work in motion pictures, Mead has executed many extraordinary projects, including a futuristic pavilion he designed for the Spaceship 2056 roller coaster in Japan, 750+ interior spaces in the Middle East, a yacht for Donald Trump and a custom interior for a privately owned Boeing 747. Syd Mead's work is the subject of numerous books and DVDs, and he has been honored for his contributions to architecture, automotive design and cinematic special effects.

I am a long time fan of artist/designer/futurist Syd Mead's work and have several of his books in my library. This most recent publication of his work is a welcome addition to the collection and shows many examples of Mead's more recent projects and the evolving nature of his artwork and vision. Mead technique manages to blend razor sharp realism with abstract expressionism to create futuristic worlds of singular beauty and imagination. "Sentury II" is a large format volume with exceptionally fine reproductions of Mead's artwork - highly recommended for anyone interested in conceptual design, futuristic visioning, and sci-fi cinema.

This book reviews Syd Mead's most recent projects and are absolutely amazing. As any Syd Mead book, this will go out of print soon enough and won't be affordable. Get it ASAP!!

This is large format squarish art book with 176 pages. It comes in paperback and hardcover, with the latter costing more than twice as much. Publisher Design Studio Press printed everything with glossy paper. The binding for the paperback is quite good so I'm not sure if the hardcover is worth twice the price.

Inside, the gallery of work featured are the concept designs and illustrations for various movies, commercial projects and games. There are architectural style drawings ranging from restaurants to city scenes to underground bunkers, robot designs for Turn A Mobile Suit Gundam, futuristic designs of vehicles, production design for movies like Mission Impossible III, and even some of his personal doodles and cartoons. Everything is printed large.

The concept designs are cool, especially those of interiors and transportation vehicles. They are meticulously drawn with architectural style lines with controlled colour schemes that you can easily identify. Everything looks very refreshing and unique, unlike any other stuff I've seen from other artists. There's also plenty of first-person commentary from Syd Mead talking about the projects, his ideas and how he created them.

It's certainly the book to check out if you're into futuristic concept or industrial design.

I just received this book and I have to say it is a fantastic purchase: one of the best collections of Syd Mead's work to date!

For many people learning the "art" of industrial design it can be a daunting task analyzing what it is that makes a great design. A finished Mead painting is so complex and well executed that it can obscure the process behind it and hypnotize you into entering the world. Indeed they are at a real world level of detail, so to have a book so crammed full of line drawings in addition to the finished paintings is an absolute godsend. There are examples of design evolution for several projects, my personal favourite being a massive spread of futuristic two tone car sketches that I wish I could drive, along with the Model T redesign and a drilling vehicle.

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), the lightcycle design from TRON 2.0 is superb and a great reminder of how timeless the style of this master can be.

I had high expectations for this release and it has not disappointed in any way.

I'm a Syd Fan from when I was a kid. I got all his available publications. Got Sentury and Sentury the reprint and a lot of other great collections of his artworks. This man shaped our worlds of immagination... and he is behind the sets of many great movies and this new book will not disappoint you. More views of his incredible future cities, cars, ships. A vast sea of inspirations for sci-fi artists. The future as I would like it to be... thanks Syd, more please!
