4.0 out of 5 stars Wow! April 18 2002
Although the 4th is less satisfying, I haven't listened to a symphonic work as hair-raisingly energetic as Karl Atterberg's Symphony No. 1 since the first times I heard Carl Nielsen's 5th and Douglas Lilburne's 2nd Symphonies! The tension is unflagging from the beginning, each movement flows logically into the next--down to a most satisfying final cadence--, and Atterberg works modal melodies and fanfare-like polyphonies into a work that's both modern and timeless. MORE ATTERBERG, YES, PLEASE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Where has Atterberg been? Jun 7 2001
With the arresting start of the First Symphony, I was hooked. This is a wonderful performance of a fun, exciting piece that deserves to be widely known, with the strings in particular seeming to relish the many opportunities they have to play romantic, but not trite, melodies. The recording of the Sinfonia Piccola is of lesser quality, but still a worthwhile work. Let's hope more Atterberg will be generally forthcoming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kurt Atterberg's Symphony no. 1: A Jewel! Oct 5 2008
By David Southren - Published on Amazon.com
The first symphony by Kurt Atterberg is absolutely outstanding and portrays different faces each time it is listened to. From the start to finish it is a cohesive composition and it is obvious that all 4 movements are thematically connected; the second movement adagio is incredibly beautiful- I doubt any listener will fail to appreciate its lasting reward with each listening.
