5.0 out of 5 stars Music Which Aches To Be Heard July 28 2007
By Joseph T. Coleman - Published on Amazon.com

I borrowed this CD from the Public Library based on memories of an earlier version of the Symphony No. 1 on vinyl. Now it is a must own item for my personal collection.
The inclusion of "Crown Imperial" on this CD is a wonderful bonus. The first hearing at full volume by my home audience of Crown Imperial, obtained the simple but apt response of "Wow!". There is a cheerful and stately grandiosity there leading to a resounding and truly unforgetable climax.
The Symphony No. 1 sounds modern today, some 70 odd years after its creation. The entire work will make a profound impression on the attentive listener. The relentless scherzo movement followed by melancholy in the mood of November heard in the adagio cannot fail to resonate. The orchestra plays flawlessly throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not so good as the RCA version. Sep 30 2011
By Carlos Quintero - Published on Amazon.com
Maestro Andre Previn is with no doubt the best Walton interpreter of all times, and specially the owner of this symphony.
After listening a kind of miracle as was his first effort with the LSO (RCA) that is the unbeatable reference for this work,
this newer version could be disappointing for some. Good as it is, it lacks the power and drama of the former recording.
If you want to know the real Previn's mastery in this work, just go for the RCA version with the London Symphony Orchestra.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Brit Nov 30 2009
By Norman H. Stevens - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The 1st symphony of Sir William Walton written in 1935 (a great year for music) is a powerhouse of different emotions and textures. This Telarc performance by Andre Previn and the Royal Philharmonic do a fine job of sending the message, but I would have prefered to find Previn's sixties recording with the London Symphony, roughly the difference between pink and bright red! The additional pieces on the Telarc are two coronation marches-Crown Imperial and Orb and Scepter, which make up for the difference.
